I think the 2015 MTCA class is about 160.
I think if you are trying to use the numbers to gauge the effectiveness of the coaches you should focus on the second number in Em’s dad’s list. (the acceptances) And I don’t take offence that he left off my D and her school Really!
@nothmath 1 - MTCA’s “Final Decision” page has 168 students on it. Approxmately 102 are MTer’s.
@evilqueen - if it didn’t say “MT” I did not include it. Sorry.
What I found interesting was the yield numbers, which have nothing to do with MTCA per se. Even though the final decision numbers are not absolutely complete and comprehensive, and some numbers are too small to tell you much, I think you can spot some schools that issue a high number of offers with relatively low yields.
I thought it was also interesting that some schools that are very well regarded have somewhat low yields, which says to me that the pool of sought-after students tends to audition for roughly the same set of schools (which is pretty much what logic would dictate).
^^My bad, @EmsDad you 100% said Musical Theater, even bolded it. And I honestly was joking.
It is also interesting to see how the landscape shifts year to year. Last year for example many more MTCA chose Rider than this year although the offer amount was similar.
None of these numbers (or any other coach’s) can be viewed as absolute proof of the quality of the coaching. We don’t have a control. We don’t know how these candidates would have fared with a different coach or no coach at all. It’s the same problem we face with program rankings. Still, 96% success rate impresses me.
The yield question is interesting though. MTVT on another thread says her class is twice the size of the sophomore class. Is that by design? A mis-prediction of yield last year or this year?
I’d also love to see a comparison of incoming freshman class size with graduating class size. It would be useful for parents to be able to understand the odds that their kids will graduate.
One of the things I find fascinating in reading back over old threads is how certain schools have ebbed and flowed (in terms of popularity) through various classes
For those who are concerned that coaches are taking over all of the spots in the top programs, here is an interesting comparison of the two coaching services I could find figures for, College Audition Coach (Mary Anna Dennard) and MTCA, and that are frequently mentioned on CC. It simply shows how many of their students chose to attend these particular programs last year. I agree that we don’t know how these students would have fared without a coach. And we don’t know which other of the kids in these programs may have used a coach. But we do know these students used a coach and these are their results. I only used 3 well-known schools just to get a general idea of how many of these coached kids find spots in well known programs.
2014:
School: Coach: Kids Attending
Michigan MT College Audition Coach 7
MTCA 2
CCM MT College Audition Coach 1
MTCA 2
CMU College Audition Coach 4 (1 deferred for professional job)
MTCA 1 (acting)
So for most of these well-known schools, there appears to be plenty of spots available for kids who did not use these particular coaches or any coach at all. Just thought it was interesting. It is not scientific by any means.
@vocal1046 I can offer an anecdotal comment about class size. BW has reduced it’s class size this year (from 18 to 15) and rumor is future class sizes will not go up (in fact I heard 12 is the new desired class size but not from anyone making the decisions! ). In an ideal world, they want the graduating class size to equal the original admitted class. I’m not sure what precipitated the change (and admittedly it may not seem like a huge change in raw numbers but it does reflect a 30 percent reduction).
That’s interesting!
@vocal1046 according to the showcase web site, the senior MT class is 23. I think the sophomore class started out bigger but I don’t know exact numbers. People transfer, but I have a hard time believing that could cut a class of 50 in half!
Maybe there is a substantial number of students who do not perform in the showcase?
Possibly! I will ask around.
We’ve been told that UArts’ classes are around 24, and that they used to have to audition to be in the NY showcase, but that this will not be the case starting in the next year or two. Plus, they will have showcase options in NY, LA, Chicago, and Philly.
Wow, that’s fantastic! Thanks for the info @myloves !
For those who are interested, Mary Anna Dennard has updated her site with the final decisions of her 2015 Coaching students.

Am I insane or are both MTCA and Mary Anna ‘claiming’ the same Carnegie Mellon student? Is it common to use coaches from multiple companies?
I recently heard of a student who used three services. 1 for general coaching, 1 for songs and 1 for monologues. If you read the background page here, there are a few people who used 2-3 sources for their packaging.
I thought the same but that girl must have used both!!! Mary Anna seems to have a broader range of schools than I would have expected.
The student in question used MTCA for song repertoire and song coaching and Mary Anna’s College Audition Coach company for monologue selection and monologue coaching, and attended Mary Anna’s private Moonifeds auditions. This is becoming a more common occurrence as students look to be well-prepared for their audition season. Indeed, some students use multiple coaches and attend multiple summer programs.
Awesome…ordinary people fall further and further behind.
With cost of multiple college programs (many of which are north of $4K), coaches (variable, but not cheap), travel etc (depends on your part of country and number of auditions/visits) - it would seem to me that you could spend a year’s tuition (depending on school) on the audition journey alone. Does that blow anyone else’s mind?
