Hello!
I am a junior who’s going to be applying for college soon. My dream school is UMich. Other target schools are Vanderbilt and Purdue. I was suspended in freshman year for a fight. I haven’t gotten in any big trouble since. Michigan and Vanderbilt give the option of applying with the “Coalition Application”. It seems that there is nothing on the Coalition Application regarding discipline. If I submit my application using the Coalition App, will the colleges NOT know I got suspended?

Thank you!!!

P.S. I asked my counselor. She said that my school keeps a disciplinary record, but it doesn’t get sent out to any colleges. That being said, if the college calls the school up and asks, my HS is obliged to tell the truth.

If the application asks, report the incident honestly. Colleges will take into consideration the fact that it happened freshman year and you’ve had a clean record since. If you can demonstrate remorse and explain what you learned from the experience, that is even better.

If the application doesn’t ask, then you’re okay. It is better not to have the “what if?” hanging over your head. Report it and move on with a clean conscience. It is unlikely to be the reason you’re rejected, but if it unexpectedly comes out later and there’s even a hint you were trying to cover it up, it could certainly get you thrown out.

Thanks. Just wondering, does the Secondary School Report ask any questions regarding suspensions?

Answer any questions asked honestly.
if it was one incident that was not violent and no further incidents, I wouldn’t think it would be an issue.
