Coasties Give KP Some Love

JM see I am starting a new thread for you...don't you just luv me? HAW HAW.

Anyway, last weekend KP and CG met head to head in crew...fours with cox(oops will they censor me?)...KP won that one...congrats.

This Saturday the two teams meet in soccer(men's) at New London. Football is Nov. 12 here as well.

Hopefully I will seem Jamz there...will they be sending a big "crew" up there?

The "crew" teams will meet at the Head of the Connecticut race on Oct. 9. Steve will be there in the Novice A boat.

I will keep you guys posted on the rivalry. It should be fun!

Now you're cookin'! Hey, do you ever check your "real" email? GRIN! Sent ya one. I have to do this:
Gamecox
Yep! It worked! Ooooo. I didn't check the soccer schedule. Nuts! I only looked at the football one on Nov. 12th. I'm sure USMMA kids will be bussed in by the masses for that game. Every speech we heard this week-end by the Vice Admiral referred to this big football game. I'll leave it to your imagination to guess what he said. ;) I'm kinda scared about the crew competition since I know who is on that team and what he can do. Maybe we'll let you just have that one and take our bruises! I envy you that you are so close and get to go see the football game......Get pix for me!!

Send me a pm...my email is down for some reason. Thanks.

no teasing necessary

Thanks Kp2001........

Go USMMA!!!!!!!!! YEAH!!!!

YEAH!!! We have another team member! Thanks KP2001!! Go Mariners!!

Bossf51: time to get in step with the crew lingo....

a boat with 4 rowers:
4+ = 4 rowers, sweep (each with one oar: 2 starboard, 2 port) and cox
4 = "straight 4"...same as above, but without cox....sometimes noted as 4-
4x = "quad"... 4 rowers, each with 2 oars (8 oars total...4 starboard, 4 port), no cox....they don't need cox as they can each "steer" their seat with an oar out to each side.....this is called "sculling"- when a rower has 2 oars (as opposed to "sweep" with 1 oar)....obviously sweeping can be harder than sculling as each side of the boat strength must be matched....

now it can get a little complicated...
you have 2+, 2-, doubles, (all with sweep or sculling), 1x (always sculling and always alone), 8+......and now there are even 16's (sweeping, 8 on starboard side and 8 on port)...but these you don't see in competetion ...great for training new rowers as the boats are wide, fit a lot of novices, and don't tip to easily!....but get a good crew in there and these boats fly!

sweeping: dominates college rowing....
sculling: better for kids younger in age who are still developing- they build equal muscle mass on both sides, rather than one side with sweeping- sculling teaches great boat balance and control- seen a lot in high school rowing and then on elite levels...slower to catch on in college as most colleges don't have the resources to support both...but big in europe and non-college USA rowing

but nothing like seeing a 4x blazing down a course- as good as any 8!!!

study now...quiz at the HOC! will look for you there!

(ps...just wait till spring rowing- those are the races to see as they come down the river together.....usually a 2000 meter course at full throttle.....fall rowing, what they call "head racing" is harder to watch as a spectator- they send boats out every 30 sec or so- so each boat comes down the river alone (courses are much longer- the HOC is about 3.5 miles)- and each boat races for time-when all boats have finished, they rank the times to see who comes in where-but those spring races- be sure you get to those! and the Dad Vails- you are in for a real treat!)

Eh gads navy2001, don't give Boss any more amunition! Its all I can do to keep up with him now.... I have to learn two new sports just to hold this conversation as it is.

KP- Hang with us here!

:) gotta keep the crew parents in shape!

Jamz- did your son row in the Textile in MA this weekend? I'm just curious because we rowed against a Merchant Marine team last weekend in our first race. I'm on the Amry team and we will also be at the Conneticut race this weekend. Maybe I'll see you there.

Homer - I WISH! HA! HA! My kid isn't on crew. I wanted him to be in a bad way though. Sorry for the confusion. I'm just a big cheerleader at heart for USMMA and Jamz was really interested in going out for the team but alas...too many offerings and so little time. Its Boss's son that rows for USCGA and I razz him lots about it on here. Navy2010's daughter does crew as well and between the two of them, I'm getting educated and entertained. Its a beautiful sport and hard hard work. Good luck to you Homer. Wish I could come watch you guys row!

Bossf51: good luck at the HOC...daughter is also rowing, so will be there...just hoping for some warm, DRY weather for this year's race!

PS...don't forget the binoculars! :)

Hate to say it but it's supposed to be in the 50's this weekend...yikes! Now that I've been to one race(head of the riverfront) I'm an "old pro." Look for the CGA tent which we will be putting up and for a guy with a USCGA 2009 hat...that will be me...or one of the other dads...anyway hope to see you and good luck to your daughter.

That just sticks in my craw! I wanna be there so bad. I'd freeze to death but I would enjoy it! We'd have to build a bon fire on the bank or have some electric hand warmers & hot chocolate. PLEASE get more photos you guys! I can only live through you now.
