Coc

Is there a preference given to members of COC? My son is interested in Elon for several reasons, location, major, etc….however, I have concerns since my children are raised Jewish….but very very liberal. I did notice that there is Greek life, and many Christian schools there is no Greek life. Can anyone give me their honest opinion on the diversity there and how a Jewish student from the northeast would fit in? My son attends a competitive prep school and has been a varsity soccer player since the 10th grade. Not sure if he will play in college but he wants to attend a D1 school.

Thanks for any info.

i would say there would be no problem. yes, jewish students are minorities at elon. yes, many jewish students choose to join hillel. however, with many students from the northeast themselves, and his success on varsity sports would make it even easier for him to fit in. the church affiliation is more of a technicality these days than anything else.

grantb- I have been trying to find out this answer from an actual Elon student- does drinking dominate the social scene? I know it does at many schools, so I won't be appalled if it is prevelant! :) My son does not drink, and is shy. I would hate for him to have to really search for people that are not big drinkers. Hoping that there are a good amount of guys who do not drink, and know how to have fun without alcohol. I would really appreciate it if you could answer this, we are coming down for a tour in August. Thanks.

Alcohol definitely plays a large role for social activities. However, Elon has more and more dedicated itself towards academics and sports in recent years (for better or worse) and while alcohol is still a popular choice for students, there are plenty of other options as well. If you are wondering about specific interests, I recommend contacting the school about them. They tend to be extremely helpful answering questions competently and student specific as opposed to an standard answer for the entire student body.
