That would be freaking EPIC!!!
Anyone know what exactly are the benefits of the Presidential Scholarship? The website is a bit fuzzy on details. Thanks!
Yes we are also wondering the same. My daughter got the email today too.
Wow aren’t we in a quite interesting situation. I know that for the president scholar application process, students had to pick and rank a list of projects they want to do with Colby faculty. Since we did the Pulver application, I’m left wondering if we will be able to pick a project.
Presidential Scholar too!
I would assume so, as many of the people who were named presidential scholars and went through whatever the application process was likely won’t end up attending Colby. I think it would be fair to say that any pres scholar who ends up attending Colby will be afforded the same opportunities, and signing up for these projects likely only starts after enrolling. Maybe they just had them rank the projects to gauge interest and not accept too many people into the program who have the same interests? Not sure! Honestly, it seems like the opportunities for a pres scholar are pretty comparable to those offered by the pulver scholar program, the main difference being that it is not solely for people interested in stem.
Have you heard about Pulver Scholar?
No, I have not. I assumed because I was named a Presidential Scholar that I am not a Pulver Scholar? Never got official confirmation though.
I shared a little about my daughter’s experience being admitted as a presidential scholar a few weeks ago on this thread and will share a little more now in case it is helpful. As I mentioned before, being a presidential scholar gives some access to opportunities and funding. It is not intended to provide special status the way being part of a honors college or something would - there’s no special housing or early course registration or anything like that But the opportunity to work as a research assistant is pretty cool, you have access to opportunity grants which I think a lot of students use to travel, and you can take music lessons your first year for free. My daughter is a musician so has really enjoyed that benefit! IIRC, my daughter was contacted by the prof she’s working with now in early April. They interviewed via zoom. She understood the prof was interviewing other students as well. She heard from her a couple weeks later and knew that, if she enrolled at Colby, the prof would select her for the project. I’m not sure if this is always how it works or just how it worked in my daughter’s case. They kept in touch as my daughter finalized her decision and then the program coordinator confirmed “the match” after my daughter enrolled. She has enjoyed working on the project and was thankful she didn’t have to find another job on campus right away! She especially enjoyed being able to continue work on the project while she had more time over the extended winter break. There have been a few social things here and there this school year for presidential scholars - mainly involving food - but probably not as much as there is during a “normal year”. She pretty much knows who the presidential scholars are in her class but not necessarily in the other classes since they haven’t all gathered this year. I also want to add, for anyone who was not admitted as a presidential scholar, that there are plenty of opportunities for all students to do research, receive grants, etc. at Colby. For presidential scholars, it is just a little more of a sure thing.
So your daughter is class 2025 or 2024, just curious? Also, being those scholars (President, Pulver or any other scholar), does that mean scholarship or just funding?
BTW, I am also a crazy cat mama!
My daughter is class of 2024 so this is her first year at Colby! For the most part, the designation is just funding. It is not connected to money for tuition, etc. Her account does show a charge for each semester of music lessons and then that exact amount is deducted as a “presidential music scholarship”. For the research project, my daughter keeps her own timesheet and is paid for hours worked on the project. I can’t speak to how the opportunity grants work exactly since we haven’t gotten there yet!!
If your student is also crazy about cats, just wait. All they will want while they’re away is for you to send them pictures of the cats!!
WOW! 8 percent!!
A median SAT of 1520 for the 2025 class is impressive. What’s not clear is how many went test optional.
D accepted. High ACT. Assuming only high scores submitted, so that makes sense.
Note that Colby has been test-optional prior to this year. The growth from a median 1460 SAT to 1520 SAT in one year is quite remarkable to me, especially for a TO institution.
Ahhh ok I didn’t realize that. Big jump indeed!
p.s. @PerformingDude have you decided yet?
I have not! Still waiting on a bunch of decisions. As of now, Colby is definitely one of my top choices! How about your D?
Looks like it’s going to be Pomona! Also accepted at UCLA, Reed, and several others. Some good options still to come but Pomona is her top choice regardless.
