Hello! I am stuck deciding between Colby in Main and St Andrews in Scotland. I am completely torn. Colby has an intimate size where I could get to know my teachers and has the small campus I wanted. It also has a great outing club. It is in New England like I always wanted, but my major (French, Spanish, and Italian) is not perfect there. I would do my first semester abroad in France if I go to Colby. St Andrews has me in a triple language program (perfect) with one of the strongest modern language departments around. It would be really difficult, for uk schools have a different teaching system that what I am used to, but I would not have any gen ed requirements (and I loathe math, so that is a plus), while at Colby I have the general education requirements. St Andrews doesn't really have a campus, but a beautiful college town instead with gorgeous old buildings. I like the housing system at St Andrews, and Being in Scotland makes sense because it is good to be in Europe to study languages. St Andrews has tons of great traditions. I don't drink and that would be a big part of the social life in Scotland, but at least it is legal there. Basically, Colby is everything I thought I wanted, but I love St Andrews for all the reasons it is different as well, plus St Andrews has the stronger language program. Can anyone shed any light onto this decision? New Information? Opinions? Experiences?

There is a long St. Andrew’s thread around here somewhere, with some of the challenges that other American students have encountered…have you seen it?

no, I did not find that one! I will look again. Thank you.

St Andrews University is basically St Andrews; it’s pretty much a campus. Personally, I would go to St Andrews. You’re going to get that intimate feeling (socially) at St Andrews just like you would at Colby. (Have you heard of the Mother/Father thing at St Andrews? Basically each fresher is paired with two upperclassmen, male and female who both share three or four other freshman, and this becomes a “family” for support, some social events, etc.) Plus, St Andrews is significantly cheaper.
