Colby College RD Class of 2020 Discussion

@kmrcollege Thanks. Did you receive a detailed breakdown of the costs? I received a letter stating the awarded aid, but they didn’t send me any information about the costs. Emailed them already, but they are nor replying either.

COLBY LIFE DOCUMENTARY

I know that there have been threads that discussed this documentary, and honestly there is a lot of negativity in it. But I don’t know. Is Colby really as depressing and superficial as this documentary presents it to be? After watching this documentary I am seriously reconsidering my decision to go there. I never had the privilege of visiting Colby because I am an international student, so I don’t really know what to expect. Some of the things that the students say in this documentary, like intellectual conversations not happening outside the classroom, party hard mentality over weekends, and the robotic environment are really worrisome. I don’t think this film does justice to the community Colby really cherishes, but I can’t be sure. What do you guys think?

@DVDPlayer - Yes Colby did provide a detailed breakdown, about $66k all in.The cost of attendance is on their website.

@kmrcollege Will you please link me to the page on their page where you found the detail breakdown? I found the cost of attendance for 2015-16, but not for 2016-17.

@kmrcollege I am in a similar situation. I was admitted with a need-based grant of $7k, so net price is $59k. Net price calculator last fall said they would give $30k in grants, which would have made it possible for me, but it looks like not anymore. All other LACs for me have a net price of $30-36k.

@DVDplayer Wow, I have never heard of this documentary but I will take a look at it when I get a chance. I visited Colby, but on a Saturday afternoon with, so I just walked around. I wouldn’t be surprised about the party hard mentality, I definitely get that feeling when I read other-college-review-website reviews. I think the isolation of the school might contribute to that feeling a lot. I may be visiting for ASD so I’ll definitely keep this in mind when I visit and share here afterwards.

@rainybackpacker - When my D declined we sent them the results from their NPC. Something seems out of whack between their NPC and their internal FA process.

Hi @DVDplayer ! I received a letter with the awarded aid but without a detailed breakdown of costs as well, have they responded to your email?

@mistydreams No, they have not replied. Should I send another email?

@DVDplayer I would recommend waiting for maybe 2 more days, most offices reply within 3 working days

@mistydreams Did you send an email too? Or Did you find the total cost anywhere?

I paid my deposit to Colby, and received an automated confirmation that the payment was received. However, I have not heard from Colby since, and it has already been two weeks now. Did anyone who enrolled hear back from them?

In addition to the online acknowledgement of receipt of the deposit, my son got a letter (snail mail) from the Dean of Admissions along with a copy of the Colby alumni magazine and a Colby window sticker. This was postmarked the day or day after we paid the deposit (which was shortly after we attended the admitted students program in April). The letter said, “In May you will hear from the Dean of Students Office and the Office of Campus Life with information about your transition to Colby…” We haven’t heard from either of them yet (of course, May is not over!), but my son is doing the Global Entry Semester program, so has already had some interaction with the point person for that program (forms to fill out, etc…), all by e-mail.

The letter did say if you have questions in the meantime, please contact the Office of Admissions at admissions@colby.edu

IIRC, @DVDplayer, you are a foreign student? Maybe your letter is just taking it’s time getting through the mail?

@colfac92 Yes, I am an international student. I was really worried, but I think you are right, the letter has probably been mailed.

You can always just e-mail the admissions office for re-assurance…
