cold weather, how do I handle it...

(1) Have the professors go to the students’ dorms, so that the students don’t have to hike through the snow to a classroom

They do this at the Kelley LLC

Calcruzer, are you an adult? And you felt the need to revive this thread that is a month old, not to offer the OP, who is a child, any constructive advice, but to ridicule her legitimate concerns?

While I agree that her choice of words in the original post left her wide open, if you have never lived in a cold weather climate, it can come as quite a shock. For someone who is used to sunshine every day, the cold and gray can really get to you psychologically. Sometimes, all one needs is a little compassion and understanding of what they are dealing with, even if it seems trivial to some people. Hopefully, winter break helped the OP gain some prospective and she has returned for spring semester ready to face the Indiana weather once again.

Sorry, fishymom but I thought the original post was hilarious and the riducule it receives is totally deserved. We read it out loud for laughs. Bloomington is not North Dakota and to think that they should shut school down on every thirty degree day is pretty funny. Obviously the OP has issues with the weather that he or she will have to figure out - I wouldn’t think that College Confidential is the place for that.

I can’t believe we had class today. Just saying.

Classes are cancelled until tomorrow at 10 AM!! YAY!!

I slipped and wiped out on the ice today, now THAT was fun…

Of course my first class tomorrow starts at 10:10 ><

Me too. Going uphill on Fee like 20 minutes ago. Slippery as ****.

I feel like we got gyped out of a “real” snow day because IU likes to say “We’ve only shut down once since 1978…”. I’m from ** north dakota ** and I’ve never seen an ice storm like that before. And I kind of enjoyed the fact that Purdue shut down and we didn’t. But what can we do.

This is ridiculous, how am I supposed to walk to class while high without the sidewalks salted. Nah I’m playin, but seriously what is IUs policy on sidewalks? I was talking to my friend from Purdue who says they have a sidewalk crew out at 6AM, while here I notice them out at 6PM. Seems a little late to me.

They don’t do anything. Did you walk through the arboretum today? If you did you know how much IU’s maintenance people failed.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who read the first post out loud for laughs! HAHA

Calcruzer’s post is not only amusing but Calcruzer makes an excellent point: college is not a utopia. Life is full of problems and if a college student expects IU to protect him or her from the cold , the student has bigger problems than the weather. Does an 18 year old really need to be told to bundle up? Welch1016, if your post was serious, you need to rethink your attitude. If you transfer to a warm weather school, the school can not insulate you from hurricanes or floods. If this post is real, it is sad.

Wow. Some people are unbelievably rude and nasty. I found this thread because like some of the posters here, my D will be coming from Hawaii and she’s only had to dress in layers when we’ve gone skiing for spring break. She doesn’t really know what’s acceptable “non-skiing” attire or how bundled up she’ll need to be. So thanks to Fishymom, IllinoisMom and TNMag for your helpful tips. And to Welch, despite the harrassment you received, thank you for posting this thread. I hope you’ve found a way to keep warm.

I think IU should clear/salt the sidewalks especially if it is icy. There may be a liability issue here if someone is injured. Students may want to get a pair of ice cleats to attach to their shoes.

If you look at Welch’s posting history, you will see that her winter phobia is only one of her issues.

AlohaTM, I do not think anyone was nasty to Welsh. If you reread her original post , it is clear she is not asking for wardrobe advice. Rather, she asks the school to “take action” to keep her warmer. Sometimes, the kindest thing you can do for someone is to tell them to get real. If Welsh expects her future employer to “do something” about inclimate weather then she is in for a rude awakening .

I think the school is doing all that they can do help the situation. I hear men shoveling outside my window every night from about 11 until 4 or sometimes even later, they’re always working on my way to class, and there seems to be plenty of salt and sand. I know that walking up and down Fee right now must be impossible, but the rest of campus isn’t bad at all.

I know that this isn’t exactly the IU weather blog, but I can’t help but comment on how absolutely beautiful it is outside today. 50 degrees! I hope it stays like this for the rest of the school year :D

This is what I like to see.

Oh Boohoo, another Boca Raton person complaining about the weather. Why are there so many people from Boca Raton here? And they are all Jewish?! Indiana of all places?

Anyhow, layer well enough and you should be fine. I’m from Texas and although the 0 degree weather bothers me aint too shabby if you layer right.
