Hi - I just learned that Colgate 2022 is over enrolled by 40 students. What will that mean for housing for Freshman class?
how did you learn that? Do you have a source?
It’s true. My S on waitlist got an email from his admissions contact saying they were over enrolled and unlikely to go to waitlist.
They’ll triple up, most likely, unless they lose students during the “summer melt”.
Often., they postpone renovations to keep additional rooms available. I would not necessarily assume the worst…
^^ And summer melt is real. There is an article in the Bowdoin paper sating they have enrolled 525, but expect ‘summer melt’ will result in the class being closer to 500
You always lose a few that ended up in their 1st choice off of waiting list, or change of heart kids who decide they don’t really want to travel so far away from home.
Agree with @gardenstategal - Colgate will probably postpone some planned renovations in buildings to keep the room numbers up.
I doubt any renovations will be delayed. These are planned well in advance of knowing what the precise numbers of new students will be and are precisely timed to start and end. And I mean “will be” since no one necessarily knows precisely how many will arrive the third week of August when freshmen and transfers are due on campus. There is always elasticity in certain buildings for whatever contingencies arise.

I just came across the following article that covers the large size of the new Colgate Class of 2022. It makes interesting reading given the demographic shifts described. It is also a bit surprising but maybe it’s a “good problem to have” provided that the housing expectations of all these freshmen are accommodated well. The 2 dormitories for 200 students in construction now on upper campus, which I understood were partly intended to relieve some housing needs now managed in the village, are not opening until sometime in 2019.

Here are the newly released numbers for the Class of 2022. They show applications and yield up with the admitted percentage down.
