right now i am trying to choose between Colgate, Lehigh, Uroch, and Emory. i'm leaning towards a psych major, so what each school offers academically isn't too different. i live on long island.

i also received a good amount of money to both Lehigh and Uroch, so if i attend Colgate or Emory I'd have to find a job on campus and wouldn't get a car (hatteee my parents).

I can't say too much as I'm not overly informed with the other schools, but I do know that Colgate has a fantastic neuroscience program (one of a few schools that actually has it) and takes psych as a more of a hard science than most schools. And of course, I'm quite biased. :p

I'm from Rochester soooo I know a bit about UR- definitely cut-throat when it comes to the sciences because of the med school there. As a biased person, UR isn't the best looking campus for most part. It can be on sunny, spring days, especially with the canal running through the campus. You can easily fly home via Jet Blue.

Colgate- you will find plenty of rides down to Long Island as I have a bunch of friends down there.

The major differences between UR and Colgate is:
Colgate: Very rural campus with plenty of student-run activities every single day of your four years here that you will never be bored. Also lots of university spirit. Professors are very personal and class sizes are limited to no more than 35 in lectures.

UR: Campus set in the suburbs, right next to the city (cough) but there isn't too much spirit around. I've heard that it's generally dead on weekends. But there are things to do around Rochester to kill time, especially that you can make a trip to Syracuse or Buffalo or Toronto if you desire. Professors.... it's what you make of the experience, just like in any large university. Also TAs lead discussions.

How much financial aid would you need to make up with a campus job? I don't know about their availablity, have you looked into it with the school? Has financial aid offered you anything? It seems to me you'd want to know about that possiblity or likelihood before deciding. Either way, I think iit would be difficult to get a significant amount of money that way and keep up with school work. Plus it would certainly cut into your ability to take full advantage of school clubs, activities etc.

I don't think a car is essential, many people want them because of Colgate's perceived isolation, but I get the idea that even with one, there's not that many places you'd want/need to go. From campus to town there's the Cruiser and other than that a car would be used mostly for runs to shopping or mall outside of town which you could do with friends or room mate. My daughter uses her car to drive back to L.I. and a few times to Syracuse, but I get the impression it's not really essential or that frequently used and other students can be prevailed upon.
