Colgate University!!! :d

Anyone else agree that Colgate has one of the sweeeetest application processes? I feel as though I’m the only one applying there because of all the attention they’re giving me. They keep you so well updated on the items in your file and other “stuff”.

Colgate RULES!

Even though it’s one of the best school’s i’m applying to, but not my top choice…their way of keeping in touch with me is extremely EFFECTIVE, and i’m falling for it

right?
don't u colgate applicants AGREE???

No one applies to Colgate.

My son applied and I totally agree!

Lots of applications to Colgate in my area. My son applied online, so far so good

Colgate mailed my son 6 applications! But he did not apply. I just thought that was pretty funny.

The handwritten note from the admissions director on the acceptance letters is a really nice touch.

The admissions director hand wrote messages on cover letters when Colgate was sending out view books and information. I thought that was very nice. I haven't gotten anything from them since the postcard where they said they had gotten my application.

Yes! The Colgate application process is awesome. I like how the Dean of Admissions writes a personalized message to you in every letter. It shows that he cares.

And why don't they?

Visited Colgate with my D.

I had one question for the tour guide - with that beautiful valley lying in front of the campus, why did they build the school on the side of the hill.

Two points:

Consider the school's stance re: fraternities/sororities. I was told that the school is trying to take over their houses, on the main drag at the bottom of the hill, for alternative "grouped" housing.

With no room for the upperclassmen on the campus, how will you feel about walking up the hill for classes every day in the dead of winter.

All that being said, my D did seriously consider Colgate, based on its academic programs.

Colgate applications are up 20% this year.

Colgate does a very good job of clearing paths in the snow--seriously, it was an issue when we visited and I was very impressed. Students at any school in the Northeast is going to have a cold walk to and from classes and meals, so the paths and stairs might as well be cleared well and have great views. And although my child chose not to attend, I would say that Colgate does have an unusually gracious tone in its admissions department written communications that suggests a school eager to maintain and improve its image (which is good to start with).

Can those of you who have visited and considered Colgate give me some comparisons to Amherst and Williams? I realize it is not as selective and that it is D1. I mainly am interested in the "feel" of the school and how it felt size-wise compared to A and W. We plan to visit all three. It sounds beautiful.
Thanks.

Williams has 2000 students; Colgate around 2800. Colgate does feel a bit larger when you visit. These two schools do have a very similar feel to them, and I don't think it is that unusual for a student to have both schools on their list of colleges. Sports is a big deal at both schools; very active student bodies; both schools have a "work-hard/play-hard" element to them. Williams did away with frats years ago; Colgate still has them (although the current administration is clamping down on frats quite a bit). Both schools are academically strong in many of the same departments (economics, history, poli sci); Williams is stronger in the arts but Colgate seems to be making arts more of a priority of late. Both beautiful campuses, in rural areas; both have an extremely dedicated alumni network. I love both of these schools (I'm a Williams alum and my son was just accepted ED at Colgate:) )

Thanks so much. S is an athlete, and both schools sound wonderful. He needs to decide how he feels about cold weather- this year in boarding school is his first real "living in it" experience. Looking forward to visiting the campuses.

Yes winters are definitely COLD at both schools! Enjoy your college visits.
