Hey guys, would anyone know any place to find a collection of solid essays for people accepted into Harvard and similar caliber schools (if any such schools even exist ;))? Oftentimes people post their essays looking for feedback, but if we could see loads of great examples ourselves, perhaps that would be the best way to improve.

Harvard Crimson put together this: 50 Successful Harvard Application Essays: What Worked for Them Can Help You Get into the College of Your Choice. I was underimpressed by most of the essays, which was comforting.

mathmom–i agree. the vast majority of the essays didn’t seem to be what I held as (the stereotype of) Harvard-quality. however it was disconcerting in the sense that it almost suggested that essays aren’t that important in the application process. but do take note that most of those students applied in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, about ten years ago when college admissions were radically different.

thanks for the responses guys, unfortunately i can’t seem to get my hands on this here from the Philippines. any other ideas for getting successful essays online?

my apologies but… bump? any good online repositories of quality essays?

I personally think the best essays come from people who don’t look at other essays for reference/example.
I think if you read other examples you start to compare the structure of your essays and try to copy or take cool ideas from the examples and since these examples are known to the public there is definitely a high chance that other students looking at those examples thought that the cool idea you picked was also cool and put that into their essay.
Thus, the essay you write will be similar to many others meaning your essay won’t be original, unique or reflective of you.
I hope this helped :)

Here’s a great tutorial I often direct students:
