College 3 Years After High School?

I’m trying to decide/understand when would be the best time to apply to college (specifically Boise State/Utah State). I will be going on a 2 year church mission directly after high school. After the mission I will move to either Utah or Idaho and gain residency and work for a year (so I can qualify for instate tuition). Should I apply before? After? Apply then not admit, then apply after I am ready 3 years later. I would like to know which time would give me the best chances if being accepted.

Thanks!

For most schools, students may only defer for a year, or two if they have a valid excuse (like a mission trip.) However, the extra year after that may not be considered a valid excuse to defer. I’d email Utah and Boise state and tell them about your plans to see if they’d be able to defer your enrollment for all three years. If they say you can, then you should apply before your mission trip. If they say you can’t, you will have to apply after the three years.
