College acceptance competition- There are 37,000 public and private High Schools in the US

So, the top 3 academic students from each school = 111,000 highly qualified students. Add to that athletes, International students, Legacy’s, Special “Favors”, band members (every school needs a band) and under represented students from AHANA groups = AT LEAST 150,000 TIER 1 seniors all vying for a spot in the top 100 colleges in the US.

Assuming the “average” incoming Freshman class size in US Universities and Liberal Arts colleges = 1000 students (I think this is a high average) than we can conclude the top 1-75 colleges can really afford to be very selective.

Now, if we expand the student pool by taking the top 5 students from each high school plus athletes, int’l students, legacy’s, favors, band members and AHANA students = 224,000 Tier 1 students.

Sobering huh.

We talk about it often out here. That is why every applicant needs safeties and matches, and really should look for them before focusing on reaches. The good news is that there are a lot of great of colleges most people have never heard of.
