College Acceptance Letter Question

I have a question for those who have received their acceptance letters via mail. Did the acceptance letter you receive come in a regular sized, white envelope? Or did they first send you a large package for the acceptance and a small envelope for denials?

Thanks CC.

large package for acceptances & small envelope for denials/deferrals/waitlists

Some people on CC have said that their initial letter was in a regular white envelope. Do most colleges send their decision on a white envelope first, followed by a large envelope for admission?

my only ‘small envelope’ was a letter from nyu inviting me to an ‘admitted student’s reception’ that you get like a month before the actual package but it means youre accepted. or just the online ‘congratulations’ page for other colleges

My acceptance letters were a thin white envelope…no thick packets. Accepted into Washington University in St. Louis, Univ. of Arkansas in Fayetteville, and Arkansas State (which I ultimately picked because of it’s far enough away to get away from home but not too far away that commuting back is a pain).

For my D: Single sheet of paper, with the decision card enclosed. The merit scholarship letter arrived a few days later, also a single sheet of paper. After the college received her decision card, THAT’S when the thick packets started arriving.

Generally it’s large packet = acceptance, regular envelope = waitlist/rejection. But some colleges send out all decisions in a regular envelope. Like Georgetown.

the only “acceptance letters” i got that were thin were actually likely letters. to be honest, most colleges let you know online about their decision. georgetown was an exception so i knew what to look for, but you’ll most likely know well before you get the snail mail copy.

Most of my daughters acceptances were initial via email/online. The others were all thin regular size envelopes as were her denials. The worst was the rejection letter from Penn State University Park that arrived in a large thick envelope. She was very excited and thought she was in. Turns out she was denied at UP and they were trying to get her to apply to an alternative campus.

Georgetown was the only school that accepted me with a small white envelope.

In '08:
Harvard acceptance: Small white envelope
Princeton acceptance: Large envelope
Caltech acceptance: Large envelope
Caltech merit award: Fed Ex
MIT acceptance: Tube (EA)
Stanford Likely Letter: Samll white envelope
Stanford Acceptance: Large envelope
Duke acceptance: Small envelope
Duke merit award: Small white envelope

Nowadays, to save on copying and mailing costs, colleges that still send acceptances by snail mail use thin envelopes. They send only the acceptance/FA information, and the reply card. They don’t send out all the forms and other information until the student sends the reply card saying they’re coming.

Thanks guys, I just wanted an idea of what to expect this coming spring. Seems like the envelopes vary, and I would hate to receive a small envelope thinking its a rejection.

Not really the type who wants to check online, but I probably will.
