There are a number of prior “when” threads, and you can basically assume three patterns.

-Late December for the programs with early auditions and early notify dates. A few of these include Hartt, Oberlin, Ithaca, Berklee. There are more… see the current '011 acceptances thread here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1045522-master-list-music-school-acceptances-fall-2011-a.html for a broader range.

-Those with rolling admissions, and from a music standpoint seem to be few and far between. Cornish College of the Arts, Ball State (I think) from memory, and a few of the state programs and smaller colleges.

-The schools that hold to the notify by April 1 mantra, which tends to be the bulk. Realize that these will vary considerably, and notifications WITHIN programs can vary by instrument and discipline. Didgeridoo players may well know three weeks prior to the sackbut applicants.

-A fourth potential is that regardless of the “official” notify date there are always a handful of candidates that are so strong that the schools let them know early on they are “in”. These tend to be top of the heap audition applicants that the specific program wants (or needs) within a particular cycle.

If you scan the historic patterns of the Master Acceptance threads http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/10077956-post5.html over the years we’ve maintained them, you will see some waves of additions.

One of but many of the “waiting” laments, with more links within http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/872066-waiting-letters-killing-me.html

Now having said all that, the best place for info is the specific school. If it’s not posted, ask. And remember, the date is not cast in stone, and things can change drastically year to year.

The corollary to your question is “when do I know about scholarships or financial aid?”.

The answer there lies in a similar pool of mud.

Good luck.

Just plugging a compilation of frequent questions from last year http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/901390-2010-collective-experience.html?highlight=2010. Lots of topics there that will begin to come up over the coming weeks.
