College Admission Myths ... and Reality Checks

Sally/OP

What is the truth on the top 10% ranking…if a student has great SATs and a 3.9 but isn’t in the top 10% can they kiss a top school/ivy goodbye?

What is the truth on AdComs and recalculating GPA…? Does every school do it differently? Do they use the yr end grade or semester grade?

For the sports thing, my high school does not have football but in the past many people from my high school have gone on to walk on and make the team on d3 colleges, some are starters at places like Georgia Southern, Lagrange, John Carroll and Beloit (all football players).

Is it possible to play college sports without high school experience then? (I want to play college football but my high school does not have a football program).

well, tokenadult, actually myriad is a roman word. the original greek was murios, but was later changed. i think it is dumb to throw out an app. for such a trivial issue, especially because the usage is common. only stick in the butt language teachers/ that admissions officer would be so pedantic about. language is constantly evolving and correct usage should be dictated by the manner in which people use it.

Re not being outstanding in a sport–I would say it hurts you if you neglect your studies to do sports. The same way drama/musical theatre is good but not to the point of getting in the way of homework.

If you aren’t good enough to get an athletic scholarship or ace your MT audition, you’d better be paying attention to your GPA & SAT prep. (And even if you are, you’d do well to pay attention!) ;)

I have a questions that correlates to one of the myths previously mentioned (freshman year grades don’t count).

I have a 3.95 GPA UW and a 4.215 W (On a 4.5 scale with a limited number of AP & Honors classes allowed)

I’ll admit, I screwed up 1st semester freshman year: I got 3 B+'s & then Sophomore year I received a B+ in drawing. However, I also have a 36 ACT & a 2350 SAT. My school is VERY challenging. The concept of graduating w/o a single B is almost unheard of. I took all of the available honors classes and have a slew of extracurriculars. Will those B’s really really hurt my chances? My top schools are: Columbia, Georgetown, & Harvard? I don’t really want specific chances, just the result of those B’s, nothing more, nothing less.
B’s, nothing more, nothing less.

H’hopeful14–don’t worry about it. A few Bs in conjunction with your stellar test scores means you are human, not a grade-grubbing robot. :)

That makes me feel a lot better–and I like the way you put it. Being human is a good thing =) I’d like to think I experienced more than the inside of a textbook during my high school career and came out as a better person because of it.

The OP professional has posted less than half a dozen responses…yet over 12k have looked at the thread…perhaps because almost there are manyother responses…

I keep hoping for myth busting …
