Hey guys, I am currently going into my Sophomore Year at Northeastern University in Boston. I have a good GPA of 3.91 (will most likely raise it to 3.94 by the time first semester is over) which makes me 'eligible' for any top school. However, my ECs are lacking and quite frankly I have an attitude of getting involved into anything and everything not only for the sake of better transfer opportunites but also not to waste time. Currently I am involved in an internship as a QA engineer for a company that is 3 minutes from my house. But everyday after 5:00pm and on weekends I am free! I don't want to do something that is very 'token' like volunteering at a hospital (done that already no thanx). I am kind of politically inclined and want to improve my speech and leadership skills. Also, about awards: everybody transferring out into top schools and their grandmas have all these awards and some are on academic teams. First of all, what are those and how can I become apart of one? About writing: Is there a competition.. or a national club I can enter? Can anybody suggest anything? Please, anything at all including a simple list of your current ECs would be great! Thanks!

I couldn't agree more! I think some people just make up a lot of their ECs since there is really no way to verify them all. As far as writing competitions are concerned, there are all kinds. Just do a search on google.

Many applicants seem to view extracurricular activities as a "check the box" kind of thing, while most schools view them as a window into the student's interests.

Most kids, I think, would be best off pursuing extracurricular activities only after they've done the best they can in school, and only in areas where they really have the interest and the commitment to do something good.
