College App Deadlines

Does anyone know when transcripts should be sent to schools with January 1st regular decision deadlines? I only have 1 official transcript envelope to send and I’m planning on applying to multiple schools out of state. I did, however, order around 8 official transcripts a while ago and went to go pick them up today from the office, but they said they haven’t arrived. By the way today was the last day before winter break and i don’t have until January 5th or something like that to get back to school.

So, what should i do? Are transcripts supposed to be send on the application deadline or do i have to wait for midterm transcripts to submit them?

Yes — they are supposed to arrive with your application. While most schools are okay if your supplementary materials (recommendations, test scores, transcripts) arrive a little later, you should send them today or Monday. You probably should have ordered others much sooner. There’s nothing else you really can do at this point other than send the transcripts when you get them.

Most schools will later require a “semester supplement” that shows your grades from the first semester of your senior year.

Ok, thank you. Thats such a dissapointment because i only have 1 official transcript that i will be using for NYU, but i have a couple of other schools that will have to wait for winter break to finish. Should i even bother applying to those other schools? I dont understand why this has to be so cumbersome. Transcripts should be available to colleges by the click of the button, and SAT scores should have delivery aprroximations of maximum 1 day and shouldnt cost me a dime. It gets me so mad

I read on the NYU official page that you can send official documents, including transcripts, via email. How does that work? Because getting online copies of the official transcripts would be ideal

I’m confused why you are sending your own transcripts. I was under the impression that transcripts are sent directly from your counselor (and usually electronically).

This is regarding out of state applications. Correct me if I’m wrong, I’m new to these stuff

There’s a dearth of information on the internet regarding these nuances. I’m just working with what I’ve seen, which is not a lot. Was hoping someone can help me. So, I was under the impression that in state transcripts were sent by my counselor just because the list of colleges on my school website were all in state schools

Normally all transcripts, regardless of whether you’re applying to in state schools or out of state schools, are sent electronically by your counselor.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. So, I checked my high school website and it said that all schools under the common app and coalition app are sent transcripts upon listing your guidance counselor. I then checked on common app and it has a list of things that can be checked off as complete, such as fee waiver, school report, counselor reccomendation, optional report, mid year report, and final report. I have the first 3 checked off in the order that I typed them. Do you think the school report are the transcripts? I hope it is

My daughter had to submit signed receipt forms to her school counselor for every college she was applying to so that they can send the transcripts electronically. Not sure if it’s the same for every school.

The school report is a description of the school (demographics, class offerings etc). You mid-year report is the transcript. I would guess that more often than not, that is sent after the others because at some schools the semester doesn’t end until late January so a transcript can’t be sent until then. Colleges understand that and don’t expect them right away. It could be your counselor will send them after the winter break.

I’m not sure, I suppose it’s possible that with the school report a transcript up to the end of last year is sent.

Can you reach your counselor to ask these questions?

I’ve just emailed my counselor. It is Christmas Day, though, so I’m not expecting a reply until tomorrow. My 1st semester grades are finalized mid January, which seems a little too late for the app evaluation process

It does sound like everything is normal and under control. I wouldn’t worry, but hearing from your counselor should confirm this and put you at ease. Merry Christmas!

Colleges typically want transcripts sent directly by the high school regardless of whether they are out of state. It is usually something submitted by the counselor, and with the common app it is part of the School Report; the Counselor Recommendation in the common app used to be something the counseloir could submit as part of the school report in which the counselor provides views of the students academic abilities and progress, but the counslor recommendation was made a separate form last year. However, colleges that still accept paper transcripts usually also accept transcripts if sent by the student if the transcrpt itself is in a sealed envelope provided by the high school to the student and it has not been unsealed before it arrives (to send it, the student simply puts the sealed envelope in another envelope). In other words, colleges want a transcript for which the student has had no opportunity to modify.

Most colleges with early Jan application deadlines accept transcripts that arrive after the app deadline. Some, however, state that they want them in their hands by the app deadline. However, for those , if you have a transcript, you can often send a copy by the deadline and then have the high school send an officlal copy as soon as school reopens. Also, those colleges typically provide a second chance to submit needed materials. If a transcript has not arrived for some time after the app deadline, the college will send a notice to the applicant telling the applicant the item is missing and needs to be sent promptly.

The mid-year report, mentioned above, which many colleges want but many do not, is a different submission of the transcript and something that is supposed to be provided after you have already applied and submitted a transcript with grades through junior year.

Hey, i just got a reply from my counselor: “Correct. If I remember correctly, though, I completed all of your components bc you added me as counselor last week. Unless I’m going crazy, I finished yours (transcripts, school report, counselor rec). You can check on your end to see that I’ve submitted…”.

That sounds like good news. I’m confirming on my side to see if the Common App just doesn’t provide the status of transcript submissions, but i think things are going to work out just fine.

Thanks for all the feedback, and Merry Christmas too!

Thank you, Drusba. That bit of the school report being a catch all for the transcripts tells me exactly what i was looking for.

Do you know if transcripts are submitted by your counselor and then distributed to all schools listed by the applicant on common app, and that includes schools added after the counselors initial submission or do they have to be independently sent to each school? Because my guidance counselor finished the school report about 2 weeks ago, and I’ve added schools since then. Will that be a problem?
