Hello, recently, I've been trying to create rough drafts for college essays. I've noticed many of colleges ask for and essay/short answer asking applicant's to "explain a time you've used creativity". After thinking for a while, I decided to write about an in-class science contest in second grade, but I'm worried that, to many upper-level schools, this will come off as childish and unremarkable. Does anyone know exactly what colleges want out of these essays? Would my essay, despite being authentic, be looked down upon as trivial? In other words, are colleges looking for an essay that talks about a significant accomplishment or an essay that reflects you?

I wouldn’t recommend bringing up something from second grade. Only your mother would enjoy hearing about that. The essays, with the exception of the ones who want to know your background, should be about the type of person you are now and the types of activities you have been doing the past few years.

I haven’t seen this particular prompt come up. But not everyone will have some significant accomplishment that is creative, so you can just think of something that shows how you use creativity in your own way that is revealing about you.

Just FYI this post was written in May 2011 so the OP has probably written the essay already ;).
@ajmrer, generally on CC posters don’t revive old threads unless there is a reason for doing so, e.g., if you are having a similar question and the thread is relevant to a current concern. In this case, the initial post was 2 1/2 years ago and that person doesn’t need his/her question answered anymore.

ajmrer is a spammer and revived this to spam and I didn’t notice the date, so explanation unnecessary…grrrr I hate when that happens
