Hey guys and gals. I’m a rising senior in the state of Maryland, and I’ll be applying to college in the fall.
Here are some of the schools I’m looking at:
UConn
UMD
UMBC
UT Austin
UMass Amherst
Virginia Tech
Penn State
Rutgers NB
UWisc - Madison
U Florida
UPitt
Towson
Purdue
I want to major in Finance/Accounting, but there are not many colleges with highly rated business programs in my state. UMD is a slight reach for me, and UMBC isn’t what I’m looking for, even though I’m likely to get in. Towson has a worse reputation than both of these schools, and I just don’t want to go there. A lot of the schools on my list have high ranking business schools, and I’m likely to get into some of them. If I get into UMD then none of it matters, since I would go there. Tuition is what I’m most concerned with. State schools for out of state are really expensive, such as UConn which has 50K+ per year for OOS students for tuition + R&B which is crazy. I don’t even know if I could get any aid, even though I’ll try. Can I get some advice on this please? Thanks.
I’m not sure of your stats, but Indiana University at Bloomington is supposed to be a great business school. The school is not too hard to get into, and they’re pretty explicit about their requirements. UT Austin is really hard to get into if you aren’t in Texas. Best of luck to you
As others have pointed out, OOS schools will be expensive. UT-Austin is less than 10% OOS students so very hard to get into. If you are interested in Finance/Accounting, look at schools like Marist and Bentley. They can be generous with merit awards. You might also run the NPC for a couple of the SUNY schools - Binghamton and Albany have very good business programs.
Would you consider McDaniel College in Westminster, MD? Accounting, Business Administration, and Accounting Economics are among the most popular majors at McDaniel. Professor Kerry Duvall and Professor Julie Routzahn are both considered excellent accounting professors.
I also really like how the college gives students the opportunity to participate in VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), which is a great way to hone skills and give back to the community.
The college is pretty generous with merit aid; with your stats, I’ll bet you could qualify for a nice package.
You have a decent chance for admission to UMD (probably Freshman Connection) but it’s unlikely that you will get admitted to the Maryland Smith School of Business. You might want to look at The University of Delaware where you have a good chance for a merit scholarship that will bring the cost of attendance closer to your in-state options.
