Do a lot of people here have private college application tutors? I have a counselor and a few other teachers at school who will read my essays, but I'm wondering if it's really necessary to have a private application tutor on top of all that. What do these tutors do apart from the essays?? My parents are iffy about paying for one and whether these tutors are really necessary during the whole college application process.

I’m sure tutors can give you hands-on, helpful knowledge about everything about the college application process. However, CC is good enough IMO.

Tutors can do a lot of the leg work on schools, and give you more individualized attention on making a list or preparing essays than most public schools can offer. They can also help package your applications (to make 'em look perty), etc.

Also, many students find that they don’t work well with their parents on things like applications – think back, when you learned to drive, was it easy for your parents to be your teacher, or after several crying-shouting scenes did everyone decide that a driving tutor would be the best thing to preserve family sanity.

Now, is it worth it. Many people think so, others think it’s a waste of money. As with all things, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

FWIW, we didn’t go this route with either of my D’s each of whom got into their first choice, so I guess we didn’t need it.
