Exactly how much are monthly college payments? What's the range? Are they a couple hundred, sixty bucks, or thousands if you didn't get a lot of finaid? I've heard there is a shock to the system when parents see them. What happens if it is too much and they can't pay it? Are there horror stories of being thrown out of your dorm room?

i just got a bill for 3k, i'm a rising freshmen, which means i havent set foot on the campus yet to take a class.

Generally, at least at the colleges I've been at, if you're paying the college directly, you're billed by the semester. As to how much it is, that really depends upon the university... generally runs in the thousands. College is expensive!!

If it's too much and you can't pay it, then you'll probably have a hold put on your account, meaning you can't get your grades or transcripts and you can't change any of your courses and you can't register for the following semester, and essentially everything having to do with your account is frozen. You may not be allowed to take exams, depending upon the college. I haven't heard about anyone being thrown out of their dorm before...!

This varies from college to college. You'll need to check out the details with your college, and it varies greatly with financial aid considerations taken into account.

Best thing to do? Make sure that your parents are informed about when/how much tuition payments will be and ensure that they're willing to pay that amount. Beware of FEES! Ask how much in fees you'll need to pay.

Policies vary from college to college. If a student is paying their bill on a monthly payment plan, it must be approved by the school and there is usually a $50-75 fee. The monthly payment will depend on the amount of the bill and aid given. A full pay student may have their $40,000 spread out over 10 months as all bills are paid before the current year has ended in order for grades to be released (you are not still paying for your freshman year after it has ended).
IF parents are taking a monthly payment plan the school has probably mailed the option to your home already and the monthly payments ususally begin in July.

Since the tuition bills at most colleges go out weeks befor class begins it is true that at some colleges will not even give you access to your dorm room or classes if your billis not paid. I know at NYU for undergrads if your bill is not paid within 2 business days of their deadline your registration is dropped and you are no longer in class. Upon graduation, you can not receive your degree until all accounts with the school are cleared.
