College Board: Absolute WORST Experience of my HS Career.

Alright everyone didn't think I'd post this on here because it's kind of a private matter but things have just gone too far. So here's the story...

This year I signed up for the AP Microeconomics, and AP Macroeconomics exam. As a visually impaired student I am granted up to 200% extra time on the exams and an enlarged test with 20pt font. Since the Microeconomics and Macroeconomics are on the same day there was concern expressed over whether I would finish the morning Macro exam in time for the start of the Micro exam (I actually ended up finishing with plenty of time and theoretically if you calculate it out it would almost be impossible for the two to overlap if they were to follow protocol and start Macro on the national schedule between 12 and 1pm), so they decided to sign me up for late-testing (a decision I can respect and completely understand).

The Late AP Microeconomics Exam is administered the following Wednesday May 18, so I planned my studying accordingly and spent most of my weekend and all of the night before preparing. However, when I got to school at 12:00pm that day (missed my morning classes so I could be better prepared and have a clear mind), I waited for about 30 minutes in my school's Guidance Office as they seemed they had forgot I was taking the exam and proceeded to "look" for it. At about 12:30 I was told that the test had not actually arrived yet so I was advised to go home and that everything would be okay since I had a about a three day window and could easily take the exam when it arrived on that Thursday or Friday. So I went home and waited until eventually received a call from my Guidance Department explaining that the test would not actually come in until this week and I wouldn't be able to take it until Wednesday May 25. So I went on with my life and returned to studying early this week in preparation of my Wednesday exam.

Tuesday came and my mother, wishing for no further chaos, decided to give my Guidance Department a call to make sure everything would be ready for the next day. Well turns out after "checking" for the exam for about 2 1/2 hours they returned her call and explained that it still had not arrived. Logically now both my mother and I were starting to get pretty angry. My mother called AP Services on Thursday and they explained that they were only able to access information about the last time the test was ordered (thus they couldn't give an explanation for why the test had not arrived on the 18th), but explained that the test for this Wednesday had not been ordered in advance (a statement which completely contradicts what my Guidance Office told me). They also explained that because I needed 20-pt font they wouldn't be able to to send the test until next week (sometime around June 1), however if I was comfortable testing with 14-pt font (something I'm in fact not comfortable doing) I could test as early as the end of this week. So naturally I just chose my only real option and decided I would wait another next week and test with 20-pt font then.

However when everything seemed that it would be resolved, today my mother got notice from the College Board that the test will not be ready for next week but instead not until MID JUNE. Something that possibly might be impossible because I'm going to a University of Chicago summer program from Mid June to July.

So that's where we are now and let me just say that I"m utterly sick of all the BS that has come my way, because logically one side (but probably both) has not been completely honest and instead has been lying to cover themselves, and meanwhile I sit here having been ready to take this test 2 1/2 weeks ago, and getting told excuse after excuse as to who's fault this is.

Well anyway, thanks for reading and feel free to share your opinions.

To much to read someone sum it up for me

It sounds like a breakdown in communication between your school and Collegboard. I “think” one of the problems is that schools cannot order make-up exams until after the originalmexam date. At least that is what we were told last year when my daughter was sick, 102 fever and flu symptoms, for 3 out of 4 of her exams. If that is the case, needing aa 20pt exam would probably complicate that process, adding additional time for the school to receive the make-up exam. I sure hope that this gets worked out and you are able to take the exam before your summer program. But look on the bright side, you ge a little extra time to study! Best of luck to you!

Dang! That sucks. Hmm…Is it possible for you to come back home on the specific AP day and take it? That could work.

Wow… well, I wouldn’t waste my time bothering anymore with College Board or the Guidance Office for that matter. They both seem to have misinformed you at one time or another and it is useless to try to get them to talk to your way. I would say, though, that you should ring a call to College Board and confirm from them the date of your exam and then inform your Guidance Office of that day so everything is set. Since you need disability assistance in the form of a larger font paper, I hope someone sensible at College Board thinks of that and works everything out faster. On the positive side (I know it sucks to wait, but you have to sadly suck it up), you have less than 20 days which means more refreshing of memory and a few more hits on those practices.

Seems to me that this was more a failure on the part of your school’s guidance office rather than the College Board.

In any case, I really feel for you because I know how stressful APs are for anyone, but for someone in this situation, I can’t even imagine how much stress it is. I really hope things go your way!

I agree with sd6

They shouldn’t have forgotten that you were taking an exam, they should have a record or something. So they didn’t have to “look”

Thanks for the replies everyone, very valid points. Just an update on the situation (or lack there of) we put a call into the College Board on Tuesday regarding when my new test date would be, but we’ve yet to hear anything back from them (which sadly just doesn’t surprise me anymore).

I suppose all companies have their flaws, just hope they’ll actually learn from this.

The office is at much at fault as the college board; at least, for the first couple times, it was their fault, but the delay in delivery is probably more Cb’s fault.
