College Board SAT Online Course FAQ

I made this due to all the threads asking about the online course. I will be updating it infrequently.

CollegeBoard sells a 4-month subscription for $69.95. A subscription code, however, can be purchased on ebay for $10.

How long does the online course subscription last?
4 months
How many tests are included with the online course?
There are 10 different tests.
Are these tests different from the ones found in the Blue Book?
Yes they are completely different.
Can I print out the tests and explanations?
Yes. It is advisable, however, that you use a laser printer as the tests and explanations are quite long. Tests run over 50 pages while explanations run over 200.

What is included with the online course?
10 tests (1 pretest and 9 tests) and the lessons that are similar to the ones found in the Blue Book.
Do these tests give precise scores?
The pretest along with tests #1, 2, 3, and 6 give precise scores. Tests 4, 5 give precise scores for 2 out of the 3 sections and Tests 8 and 9 have ranges for all three sections.
Are these tests harder/easier than the real test?
They are official tests, and some were previously administered. I assume that these tests are the same as the ones found in the blue book in terms of difficulty.
Do these tests include the experimental section
No. These tests exclude the experimental section and only include one essay prompt per test.

Anything else?

The pre-test is the 2009-2010 SAT packet: <a href="https://satonlinecourse.collegeboard.com/SR/digital_assets/assessment/pdf/F4D31AB0-66B4-CE32-00F7-F5405701F413-F.pdf%5B/url%5D">https://satonlinecourse.collegeboard.com/SR/digital_assets/assessment/pdf/F4D31AB0-66B4-CE32-00F7-F5405701F413-F.pdf</a></p>

There has been some questions about the SAT Online Course, so I think it’s reasonable for me to bump this thread. By the way, Jayxbx, can I download the tests in .pdf files in the College Board Online Course?

^ Yes. The tests open in Adobe PDF reader.

Is the BB book and the online course the only sources of the official collegeboard tests?

^

Nope. There are released PSATs and the ones they release every year.

Where can I get those? Do I have to pay?

You have to pay for the PSATs, but the ones College Board releases every year are on College Board’s website.

These are the practice tests that college board released publicly in the past three years.

I would have to say no. I copied a sample “5” essay from the Pretest explanations and pasted it into the essay grader for tests 2-9. Although each test had a different prompt the computer still graded the sample ** PRETEST ** “5” essay as a 5 or a 6 (10 or 12). However, when I entered in jargon (copying and pasting “Calico Cat” over and over or “asjkdhalksf”) the computer graded the essay as a 0. I also copied and pasted a random CNN article and the computer graded it as a 12. It appears that the prompt is irrelevent to the computer when it grades essays. The computer, however, can detect when an essay is complete jargon (just typing aksljflkajsf over and over again).

Are essay graders real people? If so, how much time do they spend on every essay?

The ones that grade your essay on the official test are. The online course, however, uses a computer to grade essays. From what I’ve heard, essay graders usually spend around 90-120 seconds on an essay.

Very nice FAQ. I didn’t know that a handful of the tests were previously administered before reading this thread, so this thread essentially led me to subscribe to the course. However, in the original post, you didn’t state the way test 7 is scored.

^

Sorry test #7 gives ranges for all three sections.

IMPORTANT: The CB online course pretest has been updated. CB statement:

I, however, already linked to the 2009-2010 Pretest in my first post.

thanks man. really appreciate it for making this thread. And you’re 100% sure that the 10 tests are different from those of the official study guide from college board right (BB)?

^

Yes, I did all the tests from both the online course and the BB and they are different. I don’t know when the new pre-test was administered though.

Alright thanks so much! i love this site. Read the awesome guides by silverturtle and xiggi, bought a course that was recommended, planning to buy direct hits… Now off to studying!

200 pages is waay too much to print for answers/explanations for each test. Huge waste of paper. I would highly recommend just saving them on a word document and going to the computer to check your answers and review the test.

^

Yes it is. The questions “Can I print out the tests?/How long are the tests (in page length)” are frequently asked, however.

Jayxbx, I have something to add. It seems like the last 3 tests from the 9 tests (excluding the pretest) are actually QAS’s.

Very good.
One question, is usefull to buy Calendar of Official Question of the Day?
