I'm a freshman and I haven't gone to freshman orientation yet. I will be going in mid July but I was wondering when you register for your classes, do they also tell you what books you will need? Because I wanted to get a head start and find good deals on them because I am super strapped for money as all of it is going towards tuition. And I also want to start reading the books themselves.

Once you have registered for classes, I would suggest that you send a polite email to the professor asking about textbooks. Tell them you want to purchase the books, but want to make sure you know which textbooks are required and what the ISBN numbers are for them.

At my school, you could look up what books were required for each course on the schedule of classes (if the professor, of course, had submitted the booklist). In addition to contacting the professor, you can also try the school’s bookstore website to see if they have some way of looking up the books that are required for a class.

I also wanted to add that if you’re strapped for money, consider contacting the professor to see if the book is required or waiting until classes start to get the book. In the vast majority of my classes, I never used the book or I could borrow the book from the library. My school’s library had textbooks “on reserve” at the front desk, and you could check them out for a limited time. You might want to see if your school has something similar, especially if you only need the book for problems or homework. In many of my classes, the book was considered “reference” but wasn’t required material, in which case I never read the book and did fine in the course (although this happened more frequently in higher level courses).

Most school websites have book lists somewhere. You could likely find a link somewhere in the registration section of the site, or possibly linked through the schedule. Different schools get their book lists up at different times though. My school has had the fall book lists up for about 2 months already, but other schools won’t have them posted for a while yet. It all depends.

As others have mentioned, you can always just email the professors and politely ask them if they have made their book selection yet. If so, make sure you get the ISBN number so you can be sure to get the right book.

Not important, but I thought I would recommend you to NOT purchase books from your university bookstore. It is guaranteed to be overpriced and packed with other books you do not need.
