University of North Dakota in Grand Forks experienced flooding back in the late 70's (bad flood was 1997). Husband woke up one mornnig and stepped in several inches of water in the basement of his fraternity house. I can remember not being able to take showers or flush toilets at my sorority house, either, as sewers were backing up. People were getting sick from unsanitary conditions. We sandbagged for a few days, but the University finally announced that the last 10 days of the school year were cancelled so we never had finals that year.

to the poster above regarding the '04 hurricane season in florida:

that was crazy. i don't think anyone around our age (i was in 8th grade) realized just what a hurricane(s) could do. i'm in central florida - not near the coast AT ALL - and I couldn't get out of my neighborhood for 2 days due to trees down. I didn't have power for 2 weeks, in the blazing Florida heat. And I know we weren't alone in being powerless. We didn't have a full week of school until October.

My brother was at Washington State University in 1980 when Mt St Helens blew. First black clouds covered the sky and then a thick coating of ash started to settle over everything. Darkness, confusion, conflicting advice, difficulties with public services, it was pretty wild for a few days. I can't remember how long the campus was shut down. The kids who were there will never forget it.
