I understand that many universities around the country are helping out the displaced college students. I am not sure of a central resource to find out what schools are helping out but I have heard that many schools in Missouri, Kansas,Texas and Arizona are offering help to these students.

I live in New York and there are a lot of students in my town who go to Tulane. I hope everything works out okay, I know one neighbor who goes there is in Texas. It amazes me how a natural disaster has such an effect on education. My heart goes out to everyone hurt by the hurricane.

At convocation yesterday at U of Michigan, parents were informed they are developing a program to help students from other universities that need to transfer in for a period of time. Students from U of M are going to do service trips over (maybe) fall and definitely spring break to help recovery efforts.

Please be aware that there is a new subject forum under the Parent Forum entirely devoted to the Hurricane and Tulane (and other college) students. Within that forum, there is a thread on College Students Affected by Katrina. The link to THAT thread is:

Many colleges are offering places to these affected students, some with free tuition. People are posting these as we hear of them. I have posted this afternoon a copy of the letter sent out by the President of Brown University where one of my D's just arrived yesterday (she sent me a copy of this e mail as she knows I am active on CC and we were just talking of this dilemma yesterday when I dropped her at college). Brown is offering free tuition to any RI resident enrolled at these affected colleges, as well as siblings of current Brown students who were enrolled at these schools. Please see the thread and various posts if needed.

As of this morning, about 62 Tulane kids were newly enrolled at TCU, where I work. Our campus community is coming together to make their transition a comfortable one.

There is so much to be done, but at least this is a start!

Oklahoma City University is happy to help by offering full academic tuition for the entire fall semester. OCU is accepting music students who were enrolled as music students at their previous college. These students do not need to audition for acceptance for the Fall 2005 semester. We will even be assisting displaced students over the holiday weekend!

We have spent the day enrolling over 80 students from all over the New Orleans area including Tulane, Dillard, Loyola, University of New Orleans and others (including Mississippi). All majors are available for enrollment. We will continue to assist through next week. If we can help you in any way, call 1-800-633-7242 extension one. Oklahoma City University is here to help!

I read where all Arkansas public universities are giving free tuition to Arkansas residents who were students in New Orleans area schools. They are also offering in-state tuition rates to students from New Orleans universities who are out-of-state residents. They want these students to sign up by next Tuesday so they won't miss too much of the semester.

The State of Ohio is doing the same thing. University of Cincinnati doesn't start until the 21st, so that may help as well.

Syracuse Unversity is taking on 300 students affected by hurricane
Katrina. Those of us who are willing; are accepting a 3rd bed in our "doubles" 4th bed in our "triples" and etc... Today's concert/Juice jam will be raising money to benefit Katrina's victims.

OCU is enrolling displaced students all Labor Day weekend as our admissions staff is on call to assist. If we can help you or someone you know, please call 1-800-633-7242 extension one.

I wanted to bump this up because it has been 1 year since Katrina hit. So many CC students and parents were affected by this horrible tragedy. Many wonderful acts of kindness occurred and programs started to help the arts and these families rebuild. However, as we all know, there is so much that still needs to be done! We should keep those affected by Katrina in our hearts and minds, and we must continue to do what we can to help them recover.
