I just got an updated FAFSA correction and the following submission for same in my email. I never made any additional changes to the FAFSA. It says “college” made the correction? WTH? My EFC didn’t change and I can’t see where any changes were made because I didn’t keep a full copy of the report, only the SAR. There were originally many colleges on our list, we are now down to four…is it necessary for me to forward the new FAFSA information to the ones on the list. There is only one school that hadn’t provided a financial package and were working on it this week, I assume this is the “college” that somehow changed my figures?
The only college that will have a record of the correction is the college that submitted it. And you do not need to forward it to the other colleges.
But the SAR should indicate your responses to each of the FAFSA questions, line by line. Perhaps what you saved is just the confirmation page? In any event, if you don’t have the original, you’ll need to call the college and ask what changes were made. Since you’re not even sure which college it is, all you can do is start with the college you believe may have made the change. Sorry, I know it’s frustrating!
P.S. Lesson learned: In future years, keep a copy of your original FAFSA submission!
Thanks dodgersmom. I did in fact keep the original FAFSA but then I corrected it slightly and didn’t keep the second one lol. The EFC remained the same so do you think it really matters? All but one school has given us our finaid package (and quite some time ago) so I’m pretty sure what college it is. They have us jumping through hoops so no doubt its them haha. I’m going to call because I can’t imagine what changed but didn’t alter my EFC.
Yes, unless you’re really curious (and have time to burn!), I probably wouldn’t worry about it. I’m guessing that if the EFC didn’t change, it can’t be that important.
My son just received a notice from his school that they’d corrected his FAFSA. When I asked about it, the FA office told me they’d corrected his work study income so it corresponded to the W-2 the school had sent him. When I pointed out that the two figures already corresponded, they responded that they make that “correction" for everyone, even if it’s already correct!
In their defense, their rationale was that so many students forget about the previous school year’s spring term work study income that it’s more efficient to just correct all the work study kids’ FAFSAs automatically. (And since work study earnings need to be deducted from total income in assessing a kid’s financial need, not making this correction would end up costing a lot of these kids much needed state and federal funding.)
Are you saying work study earnings are not included in a student’s total income? I never knew that. I just assumed it was the same as having a part-time job during the school year.
Work study income is included in AGI but there is a question that asks for the amount of income from need-based employment on FAFSA. That amount is subtracted from AGI in the formula so the student isn’t penalized for getting need-base aid. It’s question 44c.
If a student is eligible for work study, it’s advantageous to accept if if the student is planning to reapply for financial aid the following year. The student’s taxable income is the same regardless of whether the earnings come from the federal work study program or from a private employer, but the formula that’s used to calculate eligibility for federal aid does not treat work study income the same as other income.
Thank you. D will be accepting work study regardless which school she chooses.
