College Choice for Medical School

I am a high school student attending one of the top private high school in the nation, fluctuating between 1-3rd place each year. Each year 50% of the class goes to Ivy's and 30% go to prestigious non Ivy's. I currently hold a disappointingly low 3.1 GPA because of its extremely rigorous courses. I entered in ninth grade and was not used to the level of academic challenge. As a result, I was a B- student through freshmen and sophomore year. I, however, have been in an upward trend by trying to improve constantly and finally in Junior year I was an A- student, but my previous year's grades obviously destroyed my GPA. My ACT is a 33 with SAT 2s all above 750. I have over 200 hours of Community Service most of which was done in a hospital. I am club leader of 2 clubs, and received 2 years of Varsity letters.

I am essentially set on becoming a doctor and applying for medical school. With this in mind, I am considering some choices for undergraduate places. My college counselor said that because of my low GPA over the years, I would have unlikely chances for high tier colleges. I took that bad at first, but now I am thinking it shouldn't matter for me. Since my end goal is to attend medical school, I really do not care how I get there. I believe that I should just attend a low tier college where I would get scholarships or financial aid or even low tuition costs, but it will also be an easier place to achieve high grades. I think there is no benefit to attending or in my case applying for a high tier college since it offers very little for my goals. I don't think I should have my family pay 40k+ per year for me to painstakingly get high grades which may not even happen for some classes. I think I should just go to a place where I can save money and get high grades for medical school application. I feel like I made this mistake going to my high school for the prestigious name and for the academic challenge since I applied since I am having my family pay 40k a year for me to suffer with difficult useless courses rather than just staying in public school and retaining a 3.9 GPA. Is my logic wrong here? Can I get some advice on this situation? Thanks.

Many of your questions are answered already. It’s generally recommended that you go to the best school you can afford (low or no debt) AND expect to do well at (GPA). If you think you’ll only do well in a lower tier school, go there. As long as students from the school you choose are getting accepted into med school(s) you like, you should be able to do the same as long as YOU put forth the effort.

You definitely don’t need to go to an Ivy school to go to med school and you don’t need to pay 40K+ if there are other options (usually there are for successful med students).
