College choice for theatre fanatic

Hi, my S wants to major in theatre (acting is his forte but he is VERY interested in theatre production as well). He has been accepted at: Chapman University, Pitzer College, California Institute of the Arts, Boston Univerisity, and Cal State Long Beach (as his safety school). He was waitlisted at Emerson College and we are still waiting to hear back from NYU Tish. His first choice is/was Emerson. Now he is not sure which one to choose. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have a friend at BU, and she LOVES it there. She hasn’t told me many specifics, but I’m sure there would be plenty of opportunities for him to take theatre production classes in addition to his acting ones. Furthermore, whenever I see plays on Broadway, BU is often a name that pops up in the programs  I don’t know much about the other programs though, just putting my 2 cents on BU in. Good luck choosing!

As you probably know, the Boston University School of Theatre has a fantastic Theatre Arts track within the performance BFA that permits you to study as much production content as you like while still getting plenty of top notch acting training.

My son is a freshman there and couldn’t be happier. Congratulations on your son’s acceptance!

stagemom, congrats to your son on his good news so far! I don’t think that there’s anyone here who could possibly compare that group of schools for you. Has he visited each of them? Compared the four years of curriculum at each? Number of hours in studio? Tech opportunities? Type of shows typically done by the schools and what number each year? Talked to professors, current and past students? Sat in on classes? Compared performance opportunities at each? Ability to take courses outside his major, if so interested? Showcase? Attended shows? Asked about visiting instructors? Master classes?

Ideally, these are all things that should be done prior to applying but if he hasn’t done that, he should make every attempt to do as many of those things as possible in the next month. Then he will be in a position to make an informed decision.
