I was wondering, is Boston University a good school to go to for theatre?

It’s one of the best.

Hard pressed to find any list that doesn’t have BU in the top 10. Often you will see it listed as one of the elite 6 along with Julliard, CMU, Purchase, NCSA and Rutgers.

BU also has the auditioned “Theater Arts” BFA option, which is wonderful for actors who would like to branch out a little, and include some directing, playwriting, or production in their curricula. It was probably my son’s first choice, but he did not get in. You have the resources of a large research university, in a great town, but the School of Theater - within the College of Fine Arts - is small and intimate. It is expensive, but I think they have more scholarship aid available than many schools. At their auditions this year, they indicated that they accept roughly one out of eight applicants for the Acting BFA program - about 25 each for the pure Acting and the Theatre Arts/Acting majors.

Stagemum, I know you know how things work at BU, but your post makes it sound a little bit as though performance majors in the School of Theatre are accepted into either the Acting or the Theatre Arts track.

I just wanted to make sure that people reading this understand that all performance majors in the BU SOT have exactly the same training freshman year. At the end of the year, students choose either Acting or Theatre Arts. The numbers in each track are different for each class; it is hardly ever exactly half and half.

In addition to permitting students to branch out within the SOT, the Theatre Arts track gives students the option to take more non-theatre courses or to pursue a minor, etc.

Thanks for the correction & clarification, NJTheatreMom - I couldn’t remember precisely how things broke down at BU, and I think I’d confused or conflated their program with Emerson’s (where there is also a Theatre Arts option).

University at Buffalo is good too!
