College choices

Hi,

I am interested in pursuing a career in medicine and for the undergrad, and I am thinking of a majoring in Biochem or related Premed stream. I have following options available :

U Mich - LSA : No Scholarship

Case Western : 25K Scholarship

Urbana-Champaign Biochem - No Scholarship

Pittsburgh Honors College - 10K scholarship

Emory - Oxford - no scholarship

I am torn between U Mich and Case. U Mich has a better reputation, but it will cost almost 100K more for my undergrad. I plan to do post grad in a Med school, and I think Case is also a good choice with Cleveland Clinic around the corner where i can get plenty of opportunities to research/practical experience.

U Pitt Honors college is also the least expensive but I am not sure about the strength of their undergrad premed options. However finances are not my number one concern; if one school is significantly better, I am open to spending the extra money as long as their is a good Return on investment

I would greatly appreciate your feedback on the above choices and what in your view would make most sense.

Thanks for your feedback!!!!

The OP is asking us if we can help him with this:

“U Pitt Honors college is also the least expensive but I am not sure about the strength of their undergrad premed options.
How good is the undergrad premed program at Pitt? Will he be hurt by going to Pitt instead of UM, Case, UIUC, or Emory. On another thread, I tried to convince OP that bio is pretty much the same at every school and that what matters is what OP does rather than where OP does it. I would suggest as well that Pitt’s premed program is as good as the program at any of these schools. Pitt’s opps for research are practically limitless. UPitt Hospital is one of the best in the world in several areas and that Pitt is one of the top schools for federal research dollars.

Is there anything you can add?

All five are excellent choices for pre-med, although I’d probably put Illinois a little lower because its medical center’s major facilities are in Chicago and not on the Urbana-Champaign campus.

None are going to give you much of an advantage getting into med school over any other one. Other than Illinois, they all have top ranked medical schools, hospitals, and major medical research centers easily accessible to their undergrad campuses. They’re all are pretty high in NIH research rankings as far as the amount of research going on.

Since you specifically asked, Pitt’s undergrad pre-med opportunities are among the best in the country, just as the most of the other schools on your list. The amount of debt you’ll carry to med school is something you should carefully consider.

I would go with the least expensive great option that u have. Since u are going to medical school, even though cost is not a huge issue to you, ur education will be pricey. Agreed with above posters that I don’t think going to Pitt over Michigan or Case will hurt your medical school chances in anyway and you will have good oppurtunities at all 3 of these schools. So my recomendation is go to Pitt or Case. if the cost of the 2 schools is similar. pick the school you like better. if Case is a lot more than Pitt, then go to Pitt. Mich is too expensive. Even if it is your first choice, the price is too much more than your other choices to justify going to Michigan.
