College Class of 2015: Will you be attending your first-choice college this fall?

I'm wondering how many people actually end up at their first choice school. If you just graduated from HS this year and are going to college this fall, please state the following: 1) College you'll attend, 2)Was it your first choice?, 3)If yes, for how long? (can explain why it was your first choice if you want, add whatever to this), 4)If no, why are you not going to your first choice?

This will be interesting for Class of 2015 people to see as well as people who go to college from CC here in the future to know how many do end up at their first choice. A lesson I hope some future HS seniors applying to college will learn is that some people still are happy at the college they're at even if it wasn't their first choice, so I hope there are some success stories on here for that.

Me: I will attend Illinois Wesleyan University, and it was my first choice since about December of senior year or so, but before that, it wasn't. I kinda changed things around halfway through senior year.

1) University of Pittsburgh

2) My first choice was UChicago; Pitt was my safety and I never actually thought about going there, but I applied because they waived the application fee and you didn’t have to audition to become a music major.

4) I got a full scholarship to Pitt and the financial aid the UChicago wasn’t enough, so the choice was obvious.

I’m thinking that if students this year aren’t going where they wanted, financial things were the main reason for many others too, just my guess. Good luck at Pitt!

University of Miami

Nope, I only applied because my mother forced me to have at least one in state option and no offense but I do not like any other school in FL.

I didn’t get in to my top 2-3 choices, and half the schools I applied to I decided were too small around mid-January, so getting in to those was pointless. I got waitlisted to a few that I considered attending but decided to decline, as UM gave me a full academic ride.

I’m pretty excited about school. I love my roommate and all the people I have met so far, and since nobody I already know is going in as a freshman it’s not like it’ll be HS 2.0. I love my school despite the fact that I never dreamed I’d have to go there, and I think I’m gonna be insanely happy.

Go Canes! []_[]

1) College you’ll attend: University of South Carolina-Columbia
2)Was it your first choice?: Sort of. It ended up being the only school that I applied to.
3)If yes, for how long?: I think I made up my mind in probably December, though maybe January…
4)If no, why are you not going to your first choice?: My first choice was originally American University and it was that until probably about October of this year… By the fall, I was basically sick with the idea of exactly how much it would me to go to AU and I decided that I wouldn’t even bother with it due to the fact that even if they were super generous and gave me say $30,000 in grants… I’d still have a difference of over $20,000 and coming from a poor background… there was just no way that I could make up that difference.

I’m pleased with my decision though and I think it will work out for the best for me. I get to double major in French and Theatre and I probably wouldn’t have been able to do Theatre at AU, so I’m all good. I’m also going to be much closer to home, so I’ll be able to go home on the weekends to see my family, friends, and boyfriend.

No. My application for UC Davis got rescinded because I got below a C in math. I have to reapply next year for the Class of 2016.

1) College you’ll attend
Washington University in St. Louis

2)Was it your first choice?
No

3)If yes, for how long?
N/A but I’m still quite pleased with my choice :)

4)If no, why are you not going to your first choice?
Didn’t get accepted :P

1) Williams College
2) Nope, but I hadn’t considered it that much (I was extremely fixated on my first choice, which was its, um… peer school). I figured I liked it on the tour, so I’d apply, but I probably wouldn’t get in.
4) I got rejected. Hard. It was the only school I was rejected from.

I’m extremely happy to go to Williams, though. It’s gorgeous, the professors are great, there’s the tutorial system, and everyone is intelligent and multifaceted. I know I’m going to be happy there. (plus, they gave me the best finaid EVAR.)

Nope. Not even in my top 3. Going to this school because it gave me awesome financial aid and it’s right in Boston. Unfortunately, even though it is rather big most haven’t heard of it, and it’s not exactly known for academics. I plan to make the most of it and transfer after freshmen or sophomore year.

1)Dartmouth College
2)Sort of… I also applied to West Point, but it was without a doubt my favorite of non-Academy schools
3)Fall of junior year
4)Well, West Point was probably my first choice over all. I would certainly have gone if I had gotten in, but unfortunately I was medically rejected. I will be re-applying next year. On the other hand, I have loved Dartmouth for the last two years and I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to attend. I also think it was the best option for me in the end, as I can participate in ROTC and have a year at a “normal” college before having to decide whether Academy life is really for me. So actually, all things considered, Dartmouth was probably my first choice for this year.

I also want to add that I was talking to many of my friends recently about this topic, many of whom are going to fantastic schools, and most of whom were rejected by their dream school for whatever reason. This is not meant to scare away those currently applying, but to put the situation in perspective. It is hard to know whether a school will be perfect for you while still in high school and, while you may be heartbroken when you receive a rejection, you may find another school you end up falling in love with just as much if not more. As you see from all the other posts here, you will definitely end up somewhere that is right for you where you can be happy.

1) College you’ll attend
University of Florida

2)Was it your first choice?
Not at first it was University of Miami, but when I read more about it…it became my first

3)If yes, for how long?
Ummm the summer after junior year

4)If no, why are you not going to your first choice?
Too expensive and I just fell in love with University of Florida, plus they gave me a pretty good fin aid package :)

1) Emory University (Oxford College)

2) Not quite. Though Emory was the only school I had the chance to visit, I would have had a hard time choosing it over UChicago or UNC-CH, had I been accepted.

3) N/A

4) This was, by far, the “best” school I was admitted to in terms of academics and personal fit. I’m very excited about attending!

1: michigan state university
2: not at all, I didn’t even consider it until October. that being said I’m beyond happy with my choice.
3: northwestern was my dream since forever, but I wouldn’t have been able to afford it even if I did get in… oh well.
4: I got awesome scholarship money at msu and they have a really awesome public affairs residential college. the honors college there is really flexible and it is not only a good school but a kick @$$ party school :)

1.) University of Notre Dame

2.) Yes, first choice.

3.) Tied for first for a year, then came out as clear #1 after visits.

interesting to see everyone’s experiences.

Glad that many of you are happy with how it turned out!

people can continue with this of course…

1) College of the Holy Cross

2) No

3) Northeastern was my first choice. I loved the school because it had the program I wanted, it was located in one of the best college towns ever! (BOSTON!), and I felt comfortable there. I just felt like it was my perfect fit. But … Unfortunately, I was denied into the program. Oh well.

4) Then when I realized I got into HC, I was surprised and thrilled all at the same time. I absolutely did not expect myself to be accepted because I felt for sure I would be rejected, but surprise, surprise. Life’s amazing like that. It was one of my reaches that I never gave a chance looking into and applied for kicks. Now that I’ve looked into the school more, I feel like I’ll thrive at HC more than NEU. The only downside to my school is the location, but I’ll only be one hour away from Boston :D

1) University of California, Davis
2) No
3) UC San Diego was my first choice (by a long shot) since the end of Junior year. I looked into Davis a bit in case I was rejected to UCSD, but I was pretty set on UCSD.
4) I heard/noticed not good things about UC San Diego and realized the atmosphere wasn’t quite was I was looking for. Cancelled my SIR to UCSD and chose UCD at the very last minute (I think it was literally on May 1.) I’m really happy with my decision, and I think I made the right choice.

attending Northwestern University

yes, it was more or less my first choice

tied for first choice since… eh november of 2010?

1) Texas State - San Marcos
2) No, I however didn’t want to go to Texas A&M.
3)N/A
4)I sent in my SAT scores too late for my application at UT to be reviewed.

I will most likely transfer.

Attending Carnegie Mellon (CMU) for CS. First choice for about half a year before applications season. I think I fell in love with it for its serendipitous blend of strong programs in areas I was really interested in, and the intellectual-bordering-on-geeky dedication students have for their field of study, but I was so afraid of rejection that I wouldn’t let myself become too mentally committed to the school. Anyways…very stoked for the fall. I’m very lucky. The financial aid made it my most affordable option.
