My area has a couple programs allowing high school students to take classes at the local university, UW Madison. I hope to pursue a major and a doctorate in physics, and so I’d hoped to use them to get a head start, and to avoid having to take introductory physics again, as my school offers AP Physics 1 & 2, which are not calculus-based and so not helpful. I’m going into my junior now, and I’ll be taking Ap Physics 1 because it is too late to take advantage of this program during this year. I will be studying for the AP Physics C exam, which according to the college website will exempt me from Physics 207. Now, UW Madison has two introductory physics course sequences, one of which is recommended for Physics majors, the other is acceptable for Physics majors and recommended for engineering majors and science majors. Both have three courses. My question is this: should I apply for the first and second upper-level sequence courses in the fall and spring, or the second and third mid-level courses?
I’t’s also possible for me to take classes during the summer (physics ones aren’t available), and I could fulfill a gen-ed requirement by taking a four-week elementary logic class. Would anyone recommend for or against this course of action?
By upper-level, do you mean 247/248? If your desire is to attend UW Madison as an undergrad, I would suggest that route.
Yes, I didn’t know how much detail to include in the question. And UW Madison is high on my list because of the price.
