College commuter with no license

If OP is from CA - If you are over 17 ½ but under 18 years of age, you may get your permit without the driver education and driver training certificates however, you will not be able to take the driving test until you turn 18.

like everyone else has stated, it is illegal to drive without a license and it could have a long lasting effective. I wouldn’t do it or allow my kids to do it.

In CA driving without a license is a “wobbler” offense that can be charged as either a misdemeanor or an infraction. If charged as a misdemeanor, the maximum penalty is six months in jail and a $1,000 court fine. If charged as an infraction, the maximum penalty is a $250 court fine.

Even if you are the safest driver you can get caught and sighted. You run a higher risk of liability being unlicensed and something small could have extreme consequences.

You haven’t told us how long until you are 18 and if you have a permit yet. If you are 17.5 I would suggest getting a permit and scheduling a test for when you turn 18. I would find an alternative way to get to school until you have a license. Maybe a parent can drop you off in the morning and pick you up after work. The extra time could be spent in the library or maybe you could find a PT job on or near the campus.

Now is the time to start acting like an adult and making smart decisions.

I assume the car you are planning on driving is registered and insured by your parents? I find it hard to believe that they think it’s okay for you to drive without a license, considering they would be liable.
