I've got into Bryn Mawr College and Mount Holyoke College. Could you please tell me which one of them is better for Chemistry, Maths, job placement and networking. Could you also comapare these two colleges with UWisc Madison and UT Austin. Thanks!

Here's my two cents:

BMC has about 1770 students (if you count the undergrad and grad school population). Plus, you're a mile from Haverford, which has about 1500 students.

Mt. Holyoke is in the five college cosortium with Amherst, Hampshire, Smith, and UMass-Amherst. There is free shuttle service to all the campuses, and you can take classes at any one of the other schools if you like. In the Valley there are about 17,000 students, so it tends to be diverse. There are also many things to do. It just depends on how you respond.

With BMC, it is a train ride to the city, but you probably will not use it as much as you think (although it is psychologically comforting to have an "escape plan"). Philly 's South St. is fun, though.

MHC is a few minutes in the countryside, but is extemely close to Springfield, MA, as well as the other colleges. The schools sponsor events/dances/concerts together and many hang out on the different campuses depending on the mood. You'd be way surprised about the tons of stuff going on...a definate colligiate area.

At MHC, you can get out of the valley to go skiing and go to other cities....Boston is close by train or bus (1.5 hours), as is Hartford (45 minutes), Sprinfield (10 minutes), NYC (though 2.5 hours)...usually friends have cars. The town of Amherst (10 minutes on free transportation), and Northhampton (10-15 minutes) are large enough to have many restaurants, shops, theaters, bookstores, etc...to keep you very entertained.

If you want big while at MHC....UMass has open parties and concerts for all Valley kids. Awesome.

Bryn Mawr is more intense, it seems, than MHC. That is it has a more serious vibe. Both are somewhat challenging academically, however.

Maybe it's just me, but BMC seems more cloistered, although MHC is physically more so. Because of the interaction withing the Five College consortium, MHC feels more happening. Weird, I know.

Also, you gotta know the reason I'm familiar with this is because I've dated 2 Bryn Mawr womyn, and a MHC womyn, so I have a guys perspective...anyhow, I also have friends respectively at associated schools: Haverford for Bryn, and Amherst, Smith and UMass for MHC. No Hampshire friends, however.

In terms of internationals, MHC is more diverse. Both are a toss up when it comes to the sciences and grad school opportunities. I'd have to say that if it is at all possible to visit before May 1st, you should. That way you can see which is a better fit.

Hope this helps.
IB

As for UW and UTexas...

They are both fun places to spend four years. Both are party schools in comparison to MHC and BMC.

You cannot go wrong at either school, although I like UW-Madison a bit better....but that is just personal preference.

Thanks a lot!! But...m an international..could you explain "toss up" pls??

The phrase "It is toss up between A and B." just means that there is no real difference between A and B. It comes from the idea of flipping a coin or tossing a coin in order to make a decision based or whether the coin lands heads or tails.

Thanks! Any other advice and opinion would be helpful

Visit. That's really all I can say. :)

Not an option! I'm an international. I guess the only time I'll get to see the college is at orientation!!! I really need to make a decision and the right one!! Help me out here

They both have weird names, so you have to decide which one would you rather say you graduated from...

BRIAAAAN MAWWWRRRR or MOUNT HOLY YOKE!

LOL!

Personally, I would choose Bryn Mawr over Mt. Holyoke, but that's only because Bryn Mawr has a much stronger French program. Bryn Mawr attracts me because it's wonderful, but it's at times too competitive. I absolutely love the academics at the school, but it just seems like there's not time for much else.

And Mt. Holyoke? I like it. Middle of nowhere. But I like it.

Bryn Mawr > Mt Holyoke on my scale

but... you can take the virtual tours and see for yourself! :)

Mt Holyoke's campus is GORGEOUS. But the town is pretty boring.

If you want networking, the larger the school the better...

they're both super-small.

1323 (bryn mawr) vs 2064 (mt holyoke)

but...yes, bmc is a lot smaller.
as you know, mt holyoke is more diverse, so you might prefer that.

Thanks everyone! Does any one have any other info on these colleges or UWisc Madison and UT Austin?
