College “corrected” Fafsa??

I got an email that a college corrected my daughters fafsa form. It doesn’t say what the change was or which college or why. I can’t find any information. Has anyone had this happen??

Yes, colleges can can do that. You need to contact the financial aid office, and ask them what this is exactly about. Only that financial aid office can tell you. They may need more information from you to come to a truly correct result.

I don’t know how you find out which of the colleges made the change. @kelsmom might have ideas for you.

I printed the report when we first completed it and just compared it to what’s online now and they are exactly the same. I don’t see any correction. It’s so confusing. And my EFC is the same.

You can call the FAFSA helpline & ask which school made the correction. They might even tell you what the correction was -or you can call the school to ask. You could ask FAFSA helpline if the change affected the EFC … if not, you don’t need to worry about it. Often, changes don’t actually affect the EFC. For example, if the FAFSA has living arrangements listed as off campus but the college requires all freshmen to live on campus, they could have corrected that.

From what I can see when comparing the original SAR and the corrected one there is no change. Visible anyway. I do not know which college so I will take that advice and call the help line tomorrow Thank you

Sometimes the change is so minor you can’t see it. They’ll also update it to show outstanding loan amounts, and they could have updated your D’s to show $0 in loans.

I panicked over several of these ‘updates’ but they were nothing.

We had this happen and it was also essentially nothing to worry about. The child it affected was already in college, so it was easy to just call the school.

In our case, it was something like a tax form id name being corrected. Not a change in $$ numbers.

I spent a lot of time on hold with FAFSA help line last year and in the end they wouldn’t tell me which college changed the FAFSA. It was very hard for me to determine which school made the change as S19 applied to more than 10 schools and more than one school made changes. You probably don’t need to do anything, but just wanted to let you know it happened to us.

When we submitted FAFSA in October 2018, an EA school corrected something and our EFC went down about $5000. We know which school because my son had only one EA school and he didn’t complete applications for other schools yet. We just didn’t know what was changed but were very happy with a smaller EFC which all other schools used eventually. None of schools met our need though.

I made some calls and it took a while but I found out from one of her schools that their computer system updated a date automatically even if her date was correct. Something with the new year. Phew
