College Counseling Programs

Hey guys,

I just got back from a free college counseling session at FLEX. They seem like they really know their stuff. I know I need to write an amazing essay to help make up my mediocre grades sophomore year. I have the general idea of topics, but I'm not sure how to begin and how to express them in a meaningful way that appeals to UCs.

Clearly, these guys have a lot of experience. The guy I talked to was in the whole higher education dept for over 20 years, and was director of admissions at Santa Clara University. Anyways, while I felt that they would be helpful, their programs are quite expensive. The UCs only program is $2,500, UC+common app is ~$3300, and UC/Common/3 supplemental is $4,400.

Has anyone had experience with these guys and how they help you with your essays? I'm willing to put down the money (my family is above average, income wise) but I'd like to know if it is really worth it. What do you guys think?

Does your HS have a College Advisory department (other than the guidance) – i.e., someone who can help you with college lists, essay subject choices and who can help edit your essays? Do you have someone writes well who can edit your essays (even if your parents write well, they may or may not be the best to serve in this role). Will you work harder if you know that a lot of money has been spent?

In other words, for many, if not most students, other resources are available that will not set your family back thousands. I could say the same thing about SAT preparation too.

FWIW – we did not use a service with either of my children and both got into their first choice colleges. On the other hand, I know many people who used these services and who thought it money well spent.
