Would like some recommendations for college counselors who can support my D with the application process. TIA!
Here is a link to a college counselor who has posted a bit over the years on CC: https://hannastotland.webs.com/. I have had some informal exchanges with her in the past, and she always seemed to have good advice. I have not paid for any of her services, so I have nothing to say about those.
The best way to get a recommendation for a college counselor is to network with other parents you know who have used one. Word of mouth is really good because you can ask questions and get real life info on what the college counselor offered to the student.
What kind of support you need? There are counselors who take care of literally “everything” about college admission but charge like $10,000. And there are also counselor who only offer help regarding time management or revisioning essay. They charge you less than $500 so I consider them more reasonable.
Do you have any recommendations for both?
Local is always good - so your child can have in person meetings - in my option. Check out IECA - Independent Education Consultant Association. They have a directory on their website of consultants by area and all must meet a long list of criteria.
Again, word of mouth is ideal - you need to decide what you want from a consultant - ie: list building, essay review, keeping your child on track - NO consultant can get your child into college, but should be able to guide you with a balanced list.
Are college counselors worth it? I ran into a friend who strongly recommended I get one. I was not planning on it, but my S22’s GC seems a bit overloaded. I am not expecting much support from that direction at this point.
Depends upon what you need & upon what you expect.
