My son is completing his sophomore year and we are just beginning our college search process. Has anyone had a good experience using a college counselor to guide them through the application process? Does anyone have recommendations for a counselor in the Long Island area?

You may want to ask this in the Parents Forum as well. Be warned, most people will advise you that you can do pretty well on your own if you just pay attention to the information here - especially if you start in the Financial Aid Form to get caught up on the money issues.

I have done fairly well on my own but I would like to understand what college counselors offer. It definitely seems like a field filled with many people who take advantage of parent anxiety but I’m sure a well qualified person would be well worth the expense.

cba, can you please share the counselor’s contact information with me, too? We live in long island. We are also looking for somebody to help our son with the application process. Thank you!
Does your son has one at school? He will need them to write letters of reccomendation and to send transcripts. You should speak to them first and see what they can offer before paying for a service you can get for free. I do know one however. Great guy and worked with me as a favor to a friend. I can give you the details. Kinda pricey though.
