College courses after AP classes for a HS student

Yup – I was pleasantly surprised when S1 paid attention to the classes he registered to take this fall. He hopes to do a semester abroad next fall and he made sure to get in the math classes that are pre-reqs for what he wants to take upon his return, esp. since said pre-reqs aren’t offered every term.

There are a few things he’s interested in taking that are offered only in alternate years. Then again, sometimes there are seminars or other courses that aren’t in the catalog but pop up if there is a visiting prof or someone who’s research is currently on a particular area.

We were warned about a couple of big state schools where it is almost impossible to graduate in four years these days because required courses aren’t offered as often as they were in fatter budget times.

An issue is that a college may say that it offers concentration in all of these areas to attract students but the reality is that they may not offer the concentration that you want when you would have to take it. In that case, the pragmatic approach would be to take whatever you can to graduate on time.

Son did enroll in a graduate course when he was 15. He was in the course for five or six weeks and the professor realized that he was in the wrong section so he contacted the registrar who moved him into the undergraduate section. He was doing fine in the graduate section though. The registrar said that they couldn’t have a student in a graduate course that didn’t have a high-school diploma.
