College Credits- Entering college as a freshman

What is the maximum no. of credits a student can earn in order to be considered a freshman when entering college?

It depends on the college. There is no blanket maximum.

Can I earn about 30 credits and still be considered a freshman (at the tier 1 schools)?

I’m not really sure what you are asking. And it will depend on the college. For example, my son entered his college with 28 credits - from APs. Academically - he entered as a sophomore. But, this had very little impact on his first year of college - he lived in a freshman dorm and took the freshman seminar. The advantages he has is that he gets to register earlier than his classmates - he registered for classes with the sophomores rather than the freshman - and he has more leeway to drop a class if he chooses - he took 4 rather than the typical 5 classes in the spring. But for the most part - he had a freshman experience just like any other freshman and plans to be there for 4 years. Hope this helped you.

this is very school specific … a lot of tier 1 schools do not let students greatly reduce the number of credits/courses needed for graduation for high AP scores … a lot of times they allow students to place out of introductory classes and take more advanced classes or take electives instead of required courses … this is VERY school specific so I’d suggest contacting the schools in which you are interested and asking.

Some schools take APs, CC, University Courses, and CLEP scores for credit or placement. Some don’t. You have to look at the individual schools that you are considering.

Our son had a year of credits and could have graduated in three years pretty easily with two summer school courses but we thought it more important to do internships. He’s going into his senior year and will be taking grad courses and anything else that he wants to dabble in.
