My daughter is acceptted to MIT/Duke/U chicago, but also got a full scholarship to USC, she visited USC and liked the school but is very worried she may not make to top med school if she choose to go there, she also visited MIT and found out the 1st year grades do count towards GPA, since GPA is quite important in the future med school application, she may have to chose "not so difficult courses" which defeats the purpose of going to MIT instead of USC----there's only few days left before we have to make decision, we need some advises.

We'll have to take a lot of loans if she is going to MIT/Med school, we have another child and not qualified for aid, but we are willing to work harder to support her if giving up scholarship will give her a lot better chance to achieve her dream.

First, what do the offers at Duke and Chicago look like? Can you break down the cost of each per year?

Second “is very worried she may not make to top med school if she choose to go there,” : This is absolutely not true, plenty of USC grads get into top notch med schools. She just needs to do well and if you have to borrow too much money for the others a full ride at USC is the better option. BTW, are you in state for CA? If so what about UC’s?

Thanks for the very useful information. Any idea how many USC students make to top med school every year? Can’t find much information anywhere. MIT has it online --about 80 percent acceptance rate, and mostly top schools.
Anyhow, we are not in CA, and did not apply for UC infortunately. USC is on the tuition exchange list so we looked up,turns out combined tuition exchange and presidential scholarship covered EVERYTHING.
Yes, it’s a huge difference for 4 years if we do pay for full price MIT/U chicago or Duke–no merit scholarship there. But I don’t want to shortchange the kid after telling her to study hard for all those years, kinda fell bad to say “go for the free one” now she made to all those top colleges.

I used the “reply” earilier, so you may have gotten two messages. sorry about that. I am new to this and I am ready to try anything to figure out an answer at this point.
