<p>Granted, the diagnosis can always be wrong, but I don’t think there are “mild cases” of schizophrenia. By definition, it includes “one or more major areas of functioning such as work, interpersonal relations, or self-care are markedly below the level achieved prior to the onset” and “continuous signs of the disturbance persist for at least 6 months.”</p>
<p>It is very difficult to force someone to take medication, but along with that freedom of choice needs to come the acceptance of the consequences. There is now research that suggests each episode of psychosis can result in permanent damage. </p>
<p>Only the patient with the doctor, and maybe the family can decide if the benefits outweigh the risks.</p>
