college essay help

For one of my essays I am considering writing about the great effect anorexia has had on my life. I've heard that it's not good to talk about psychological disorders in college essays. The eating disorder started when I was 8 years old and I was hospitalized 3 times, one time was for over a month when i was 12 in a hospital an hour and a half away from home. I stunted my growth, my maturity, and the doctors still don't know if I will ever be able to have kids so I have to continuously go in for check-ups/etc. My experience has influenced me to want to major in a medical-related subject and become a nurse. I think I can talk about my experience in a positive manner and how its made me the person I am today and influenced me to help others that are going through the same thing I did. Since I wouldn't be looking back at the experience with regret in my essay, and rather in a positive way, would this be a good topic to write one of my essays on? it's definitely had the biggest impact on my past, present, and future. (struggling with it for 9 years now)

Please give me suggestions ! thanks

It’s definitely a risk. I would caution you against it because colleges might think that you are incapable of handling the stress of a college environment. I am not saying you are incapable - just that sometimes colleges take it that way. It depends on two things:

How good a write you are. How well can you convey the story, and are you a strong enough writer to put a good light on it?

How did this affect your high school performance? If it did not, I would not bring it up. If it significantly affects your career aspirations, then refer back to question 1.
