Hi, I was just wondering if you have to write an different essay for every school you apply too or can you write one and send it to however many schools you choose?

Depends on where you are applying. Different schools have different systems, but there are overlaps.
For example if you are in CA and applying to the UC’s you would send the same essays to all the UCs. If you are applying to private schools that use the Common Application you will write one essay that is sent to all those schools and optionally supplemental essays depending on the individual school you are applying to. In some cases even if the applications are not the same, the questions may be the same or very similar to where you might be able to reuse (possibly with some modification) an essay from one application on another.
