I have been struggling a lot with coming up with a college essay topic. I wrote an essay about the town I spent my summers in with my grandparents as a child that my English teacher really liked this past year, but I’m worried that if I went with that topic it would be too much about the town/my family’s struggles rather than directly about me. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
I do think it needs to be more about you, but perhaps you can take that essay and redo it with more of a lens on you. Give it a focus – why is the town important to you? What have you learned about yourself from your family roots and tie that back to the physical place. It’s okay to keep the story ‘small’ - meaning there doesn’t have to be a saga or grand meaning. Keep it personal and revealing of who you are, your values, and perhaps your goals/dreams. And you’re a work in progress (as are all 17 and 18 year olds) so don’t try to be wise beyond your years, if that makes sense.
Good luck!
How does the town and your family make you who you are today? How is that relative to who you will be in college? What influences can you learn from? Now your taking more about you.
I just wrote my first draft! Thank you both for your help @Knowsstuff @AlmostThere2018
