College essay topics and content (humor?)

Do you have to write about different topics for supplements that you will send to different universities? For example, if I wrote about marshmallows when applying to x college could I write about my experiences making smores at y college? (Just an example!) People talk about how much effort it is to apply to tons of different colleges so would it be more efficient to choose similar topics for each? Would you have a better chance if you wrote about completely different things?

Also, where do you draw the line for humor? It seems like most people agree that a little bit of self-depreciation and making light on a situation is good, but tasteless and opinion-based jokes are a major no-no. What is your experience?

Thanks so much for your help!

bump… please help I’m a little confused!

Most colleges’ supplements ask specific questions, usually related to why you want to attend their school and what you have to offer that differentiates you from everyone else. Generally explaining the ‘fit’ takes a lot of work. Not sure how marshmallows are going to answer those questions. And yes, humor is good - but make sure it’s funny to a range of people, not just your friends. You never know whose reading that essay.

Okay that makes a lot more sense. Thank-you!
