So I currently go to a college close to home, and I like it less everyday. I have a dream school in mind that I want to transfer to but its 7 hours away from home. I just need someones opinion, do you think its worth leaving behind family and friends to go to the college you always wanted to, or suck it up with the college i'm at that is close to home? The school I want to transfer to is a popular state school so do you think I would feel out of place with all the in state students? I would love to hear what anyone has to say on the subject!

Seven hours is not that far and you being OOS will be a non-issue. COA for being OOS is a more important consideration however.

Thanks for your thoughts! and the COA for the school I want to attend will be cheaper than the one i’m currently attending!

Being in state or out of state shouldn’t even be a concern, as far as social life goes. People are coming from all over the place. Depending on the state, you can be coming from several hundred miles away and still be an “in state student.”

Really though, 7 hours isn’t that far away. Is it a long drive? Yeah, but it’s not like you’re on the other side of the country. It wouldn’t be an unreasonable drive to come home for holidays and such.

I’m at college 10 hours away from home, and for holidays, at least for now, I just take the plane home. It’s inconvenient if you want to go home on weekends / small holidays, since the distance means you basically only go back for longer breaks. So it all depends on what’s the best for you and your family.

I’m looking at grad schools right now, and the option 6 hours from my hometown is the “close” option, by a long shot!

I’m currently going to university about a 24 hour drive from home. It can be tough being so far away, especially when there was a family emergency, but I don’t regret my decision to go so far away, for the right school.
